I don't use one but I have never understood why people hate them so much.

I had to use a rectangular plastic container at TWO races this year.  Both were long distance and I needed a dry place for my stuff and was worried about the weather, so wanted the lid.  It paid off both times.  But dang, was that thing hard to transport from the car!   I did NOT sit on it, though, and all of my items were contained within and not spread out around it on my beach towel (seriously, people).

They drive me crazy.  In general, the people who use buckets seem to also take up way more room than everyone else.  For example, at my last tri, a woman on my rack didn't understand that 6 bikes had to fit in and there was no way she got as much space as she did.  She kept trying to put her bucket under my bike and on my running shoes.  Not going to happen.

I'm ambivalent to buckets, what bugs me more than anything in transition is people taking up tons of room... they situate their bucket to where it doesn't bug their neighbors, good on them.

I've been PITA'd by buckets, bike pumps, backpacks, etc.  Moved a backpack in the last race I did and nicely informed their owner I had moved it... just in case there was some purpose in it really being there.
