So all of my training has been done in shorts and short sleeve shirts except one run where I wore a long sleeve shirt.  Race time tomorrow it's supposed to be 39F getting up to 44F at finish time.  That's 20 degrees cooler than my coldest training run.  Until now I was planning on shorts, a long sleeve compression top with a short sleeve tech shirt plus disposable gloves and ghetto arm warmers.  Now I'm thinking running pants.  I've never trained with tights though I could borrow a pair.

What does BT say?

Shorts. Long sleeves over short sleeeves or tank. Probably lose the long sleeves and tie them around your waist by mile 2-4.

Gloves will be good as well as headgear. Probably just a headband or ear warmer thing.  I would finish with the long sleeves around my waist, headgear stuffed inside but still wearing the gloves for snot control   ...well...you asked.

Start cold, finish fast (and probably hot)

Good luck.

Wear less than you think you need.  In those conditions, I'd wear shorts, short sleeve running short with long sleeve running shirt on top.  (The latter would almost definitely end up around my waist.)  Head band that goes around ears.  Maybe gloves, maybe not.  (My snot goes straight onto the road -- you didn't ask, but that's the truth.)

I'd go short and tank with arm warmers and gloves. The gloves I would ditch at an aid station at some point and roll the arm warmers down when I got hot. I'd only layer up if there is big winds.

While waiting for the start, I'd have an old long sleeve shirt to ditch just prior to the gun.

Might even embro up or add calf sleeves for warmth.

My run this morning started at around 42ish degrees.  The first mile I wore a long sleeve which was ditched at mile one and other than thinking maybe I should have worn gloves for another mile or so I was fine.  I had running capris on the bottom but I don't really think shorts would have made a big difference.  To me the temp you're talking about (actually I'd prefer about 10 degrees cooler) would be a dream for a half mary.

I would be in shorts, short sleeve compression and long sleeve tech shirt.  Cheap brown jersey gloves are good if you think you might need to ditch them.

They say to dress as if it was 20 degrees warmer.  That is what I normally do.

Head?  Really?  I would overheat quickly with something other than a tech hat or visor (that I wear in the middle of summer) on my head or ears at that temp.

Thanks everyone!  Shorts it is.  Long sleeve compression shirt with a short sleeve shirt over it.  Throw away jersey gloves and throw away sweatshirt.

At those temps I would have to be a bit cool at the start and only wear shorts and a short sleeve top, maybe even a tank. Thin gloves maybe. That just isn't that cold once you start running. Standing around, yes. My rule is in cool weather I should be uncomfortable to bordering on cold before the race starts.

I would do ear warmers initially at that temp too- and I would definately need long pants.   I "run" cold, and have raynaud's, so I have to be careful to keep myself warm.

Don't forget about the wind.  44 degrees when its slack wind or 20mph are very different.  If it's breezy consider wearing pants.

momandmd -
I have raynaud's too.  I really get cold after runs even when it isn't that cold out.  My fingers turn white and get numb and it takes a long time to warm them up.  Have you found anything that helps?

Thanks everyone for the help.  I did run in shorts and my legs were perfect.  It was low forties with a stiff 10+ mph breeze.  I ditched the gloves, sweatshirt and ear warmers in mile 2-4 and was ok.  My core was warm but the wind made my skin temp cold.

Race was good, thanks Jeff, details are here.  http://blog.ransick.org/

While I was running the last 5k I was thinking "this hurts, how is it going to feel after biking 56 miles".  Hopefully we will find out in New Orleans.  I haven't signed up yet, but I'm close.

Hi- sorry I missed this (I replied to your PM this am).  I wear convertible gloves when it's chilly, and try to keep my hands relaxed.  Keeping the core warm definately helps, and you can warm up the fingers with some warm (not hot!) water when you get home.
