I am concerned about the Ironman Arizona swim being even colder this year than what I read about last year due to the lake not even being filled yet.

Are there any swim legal booties/socks or gloves that you can wear during the swim. I've heard last year that the longer people were in the water the more problems they had. I hope to be out within 90 minutes which is longer than most swimmers and don't want to get into T-1 not able to function normally.

Any suggestions on legal gear for hands and feet?

Thank you for your time.

I live in Hawaii so cold water is not easy to come by.  Leading up to IMAZ last year, I was taking a lot of ice baths after hard work outs.  I thought jumping into 63 degree water on race day was going to be a real shock but it wasn't.  I was actually fine and had no problems.  Most of the people who had trouble were in sleeveless wetsuits.  I don't think there is anything you can legally wear on your hands and feet.

Hands, no

Feet, depends on the RD but some of the colder races I've been to they've allowed the Blue Seventy swim socks

Thank you for your replies. I have a sleeveless suit but I also have the speed sleeves which really help with the warmth of the suit.

I guess I'll just try and swim faster so the cold water doesn't effect me as much.

If you are really worried about the cold, suggest getting some head gear to keep more of heat in that escapes through your head. Part of the reason your feet and hands get cold is that the blod flow is divereted to protect the brain from the cold. So if your brain is warm, your feet and hands will not get as cold.

I used this along with a full wetsuit in water that was 56 degF and did fine with nothing on my feet. The RD said nothing is allowed on the hands anyway.

Also try vaseline on your exposed areas.  Helps to keep you warm but avoid getting it on your wetsuit as it supposedly isn't good for it.
