My gauge for whether or not I'm ready to run again is quad soreness.  If my quads are sore from races, I don't run until the soreness is gone (just bike and swim).  Last year I PR'd in a half marathon the week after my marathon using that method.  Guess it follows with the "listen to your body" advice.

Thanks guys. I will definitely play by ear and listen to my body. I think I can determine what pace I should run after my long run this Sunday. When I did 10 miles straight last month at a fairly quick pace (for me), I was good after about 2-3 days.

I tend to do something similar, but its more of if it hurts back off, often for me running is a great way to loosen up the sore muscles. After my run this weekend, i was dead on monday. tues i was having issues sleeping and went out and ran 6 miles, was rocking over a 10 min pace when i started (normal easy pace is 7-7:30 range), but by mile 3 my legs were loose enough to get moving.

Just be smart, if it hurts cut it back/quit and go home.
