I am in! The weather in Iowa has been remarkably warmer than usual, but it's not gonna last forever!

I absolutely LOVED running in the cold last year.

Greetings, Bill!  Ran my first marathon on Sunday...I was very slow, but finished, so all good.

Looking forward to some fun in the snow and cold!

Where is your marathon?

I am going to be doing the Run for the Ranch in Springfield, MO in December.

uh oh... I can already see that I'm going to be at a disadvantage here.  I did an afternoon ride (standard for the weekends for me) and it was still in the upper 50's with only a 5 mph breeze.  Not good for points in this challenge.

Nevertheless, it's about the spirit of cooperation and a friendly challenge to keep the motivation up and so I'm stoked about starting in another week.  More importantly I'm interested in hearing the stories of the true polar bears out there who are going to be really brining it!

Best of luck to you all!

I am in, assuming I remember to log the stuff...

I am training for a half marathon in January and also have a new winter bike that I am VERY excited about.  Time to put my money where my mouth is!

Bill - I saw a Mukluk recently.  Holy tires, batman!

I went to a wedding for cycling friends and everyone brought out their weirdest, including a Mukluk.    It was pretty awesome (all of the bikes).  I am actually going with a cheap Nashbar mountain bike.  I love that thing.  I think the wider tires will be more than good enough for me, unless I find ice.

We have a big winter cycling culture here - you'd love it!

Question about the challenge: swim, bike and run outside only?  Or other outside training, i.e. snowshoeing?

Emily - in real life?????   I cannot wait - 2-3 weeks or so!

What bike did you go with - Pugsley or the Fatback??

I am contemplating a move to your area - I want cold and snow so I can be competitive in this challenge every year!!!

You know, now I am second guessing whether I saw a Mukluk or if it was a Pugsley and my husband pointed out the Surly Larry tires.  I had shown him the Mukluk online, so he knew about it.    Bottom line I guess is that the Surly Larry tires are insanely huge.

Ha: posted at the same time, I think it was not a Mukluk.  Although there were lots of bike shop guys there...

Will we be calculating our indoor training too - without the benefit of any multipliers?

Do you know who owned the Mukluk?  Must be a Salsa employee because they are not released yet!!!!

Any outdoor activity - cross country skiing - hiking - snowshoeing.  As long as it is cold and outdoors - it counts.

Well we didn't put a point value down for pizza but I am sure we could come up with something if someone is brave enough to ask! LOL

What is this pizza business?

Well if you're coming, you better call first.  We don't have snow either, and I am REALLY hoping we don't in a few weeks

Too bad we haven't started already, the wind gusts are hitting the 50 mph zone out there today... But it's raining and in the 50s.

Here's my bike: http://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product_10053_10052_503476_-1_201675_10000_200516

They are almost exact - except frame material.

what size tire can you run on your Nashbar?  I got 2.3 for my single speed and it was good on hard packed snow but if they don't pack the trails or we get dumped on I was pushing too much.

I cannot wait - I might load it up and drive up to MN in a couple of weeks if we don't have any snow yet!

Got in my first craptastic workout this year. 1hr run in 40 -50 mph gusts of wind. Talk about going nowhere fast when heading straight into it. Frown

Ack!

Okay, big talker

But seriously, you can't really swim in Lake Superior during the winter.  Can you?

charles-goff - 2010-10-15 6:19 PM I should wish everyone good luck in this, this is my first year and just so everyone knows, I do several PB's during the winter and all of my open water swim training is in Lake Superior. As for bike and run, I live in Sault Ste Marie, MI right on the International Border, I usually ride my Mt Bike during the winter months, and usually have to buy a new one every spring. The wind is almost always blowing an easy 30-40 mph here, and two years ago we had a week of -40 weather, which I foolishly ran in, so good luck guys.

I swim in Lake Superior or the St Mary's River until late Nov usually, by then there is snow on the ground and Ice is starting to form along the shore lines. It pays to have a good wetsuit and a high tolerance for cold. This morning I was running in weather that was just a few degrees short of freezing rain, with winds in the 40 mph range with gust close to 60 mph. I love training in the cold, I breath easier and don't overheat as bad, I just have to be careful not to get to sweaty.

Forcast shows a low of 29 for Monday. Guess there is some advantage of training early in the morning.
Looks like I will be at a disadvantage this year, will be too busy with ski season to do much biking outside.

Shoot, highs in the 50s all next week!

Actually I'd happily lose the challenge if that was the forecast all winter.
