Pool or open Water? How cold is the water? Are your parents willing to buy the wetsuit?

open water and yes but i pay about half of money.

Well, the wetsuit does make the expeirence a lot nicer. It will make you faster and keep you warmer. Try and pick one up if ya can, but if you can't, just pray for warm weather.

promotion suits are fairly cheap for what they are, and a lot of places do rentals
buying equiptment at your age isnt easy, been there done that

The water temp is a big factor. Depending on how warm it is, they may not even be allowed. The other issue is sizing. You can probably find one that fits, but at your age, how long will it last you? For us geezers, we're making a purchase that's going to many years. You could outgrow yours before the end of the season.

If the water is mid 70's or higher, I'd say go with a tri-suit and do the whole thing in it. I'm assuming here that you're doing a sprint or mini-sprint.

If you can get away with not buying these things it might be best to save your money. you have some growing to do (unless you are me, I stopped at 13) and will need to buy all new next year. I also remember swimming in lake MI in my teens and was never cold, even in April : ) Ahhh youth.

Yea I read your other thread and its Pac. Coast. If you are racing the junior elite then I would'nt but a wetsuit since the swim is so short and its ITU. I will also be doing the junior 16-19 elite race. But you should race Admirals Cup triathlon on the Point Mugu base on August 17th since you live in PP. see you there.

How did you enter?  I thought Junior began at 15....I only ask because I have 13 year old twins who are interested but we thought they had to wait.

Theres a 13-15 age group, they take your age as of December 31st of the present year. Im 15 right now, and turn 16 on Sept. 26, so that makes me 16 in Junior ITU racing.

Your Blog says that you like to surf. Do you have a surf wetty? Although not ideal, it would get the job done. I did my first sprint in a short suit from the second hand store- $30.

then at Pac. Coast you would race in the 13-15 age group, if you raced junior elite. If you just race the age group race you would probably be 16-under.
