I am looking at getting a pair for my upcoming HIM.  What kind do you have?  Why do you love them?  Why did you choose the ones you have?  So many brands out there I am not sure which way to go.

Go with Zoots...

I've tried others including 2XU, CEP and there is vast difference.....

I wear them in HIMs and IMs from start under my wetsuit to finish.

Thanks.  You are always so full of good information!  I had read several folks using CEPs and 2XU so it's good to hear from someone who has tried a few brands.  I think my local Luke's carries them and I get the Houston tri team discount so that will come in handy.

I have Zensah calf sleeves and really love those... but not for running. Let me explain... for recovery, before the race and after the race or any time I travel, I wear them, but on the run, they tend to be too abrasive at certain spots (for longer distances, short distance, not an issue, but then I really see no need for them either...). Despite that, I wouldn't be without them.

I haven't run with calf sleeves in the past but recently had an injury and was on crutches.  Now when I run my calves get tight very fast so I figure I need all the support I can get.

I have Zensah too. Love them for recovery, but I agree that they would probably be uncomfortable to run in.

What makes these uncomfortable to run in?  are they too tight?  never tried them, just curious

I have both the Zoots and CEPs.  They both fit my lower legs well, and the compression effect seems about the same, but I have trouble getting the Zoots on in particular over my feet, which have very high insteps.  The CEPs seem to go on a little easier and I think they are longer (meaning they cover more of my lower leg).  For what it's worth.

Good info to have - I was actually thinking I'd go with mens over womens because I have long legs, 34" inseam.

Yes, I think they all are sized based on calf circumference, so you don't get an idea of length.  I'm a guy, 30" inseam, so your legs are longer than mine.  I have size 4 in both brands, based on my 17" calves, but they both come up fairly close to my knee.  The CEP is just a bit longer I think.

i have the zoots. they still fit fine but the threads are starting to break loose and unravel. i have strings hanging everywhere from them. this is during the first season. not sure if i got a defective pair or not. i still like em though. just wondering how long before they start sliding down my legs.

I have the DeSoto active compression ones, they were very helpfull on a couple of long runs and in my HIM.
The only issue with mine is they are too long and come half knee. Rol the top 2" down and you loose the grip strip at the top.
I have the large size and like the level of compression they give, the medium may have been the correct length for me but I think they would have been too tight.

I Have some no name brand medical compression calves also, great for recovery, but I get what others have said about some brands/materials being too heavy and abrasive for use on the fly.

January 2010 research on the efficacy of lower body compression garments (socks/sleeves)
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19131276

No effects.  But I'm sure more research will be done and this is just the beginning of the debate.  Also, these were bounds and 20m sprints.

Anyone seen other 3rd party research?

I use Zensah during and after races/training. I've never had any abrasion issues in long distances- granted I haven't used them in a IM yet, but for 70.3s they are fine.

I don't know if it was trailrunner or RW, but a couple issues back they did a roundup on compression socks.  I'll see if I can't find it later, they mentioned one pair that would be 'better' for IM use.  I have no anecdotal experience to offer.

I went with Zoots, as well, and I love them!  I chose them mostly because they have more sizes than the other brands, so I could get them to fit EXACTLY how I wanted them to.  In other brands, the large was too loose and the medium too tight, so I was able to order a size 3 in zoots, out of 5 sizes.  Odd, maybe, but I haven't had any issues with my shin splints since I've been wearing them! *knocks on wood*

This is what I got.

I planned to get Zoots.  Was at an expo this weekend and they had Zoots and 2XU so I got to try them both on.  Honestly didn't feel that much of a difference but the Zoots are a PITA to get on and they have to be on a certain way and I just didn't see myself taking the time to get them on perfectly and the 2XUs were cheaper so I went with those.

Sorry-- just saw this.

The Zensah sleeves are made from a knitted fabric, kind of like those technical running socks, as opposed to the 2Xu sleeves, which are more like the fabric of a tri-short. The effect is that they give firmer support than the 2XU, which is a lighter fabric. But, since they’re a little heavier weight, I think that they would be as effective at wicking moisture and would get uncomfortably warm if you tried to run in them on a hot day. I would also worry about the weight of the moisture causing them to shift or slip and causing blisters or being distracting.
