Anyone else doing Washington Half? Going to be a cold start ~40 deg, but then will warm up to a nice sunny day. Trying to figure out bike layers. Think I should wear my toe covers on the bike?

Is that this weekend?   I was going to sign-up with friends for the relay.  Pleased now that I didn't as I have a stinking cold!

Congrats to all who raced!!
My wife and I were volunteers for the transition area and it looked like everyone had a good time.  Some people looked kind of cold coming out of the water but it looked as though everyone had a good time.  I only saw one case of road rash and the one case of hypothermia on the bike course.

I am definately doing this race next year.

Hope those that did the race will post their comments.  I have narrowed down my fall HIM to Washisngton, Myrtle Beach and White Lake.   Since this was the first year, I would love to hear everyones impression.

I didn't think White Lake had a half in the fall.  I know they have an OLY/international distance in September.

For much of the ride, the road was very rough.  I got pretty beat up the entire ride, and for some reason it felt like there was wind in my face the entire time as well, another friend said the same thing.  Swim was great, run was great, support was great, and it is a beautiful location.  It was a little chilly in the morning, and on the bike, but not terrible.

I'm glad someone else felt like there was a headwind the entire bike leg, It really put a hurtin on me. I really enjoyed the race, staff, and volunteers though. Ill be back for the Oly next year. Beautiful area of NC.

Definitely do NOT do Myrtle Beach. That race sucked.

I loved this race! Finish Strong rocks, and the town of Washington is really neat.

Cold water, I should have worn my neoprene cap. Otherwise, mostly calm, clean, great course.

I am also extremely happy to hear that others thought the bike course was hard. It was flat, and I didn't see any sign of wind, so why did it feel so hard? Some parts of the roads were kind of bumpy like White Lake, that broomstick effect. I did lose one water bottle, but it was not a hot day, so I did not go back to get it. Course was well marked and great volunteer support.

Run course was fantastic. I wasn't great, but the run course was. Great volunteer support here as well. They got ECU sorority girls to volunteer, and they were awesome!

My race report is on my blog.

I'll swear to it that everytime I passed a house with a porch flag or a business flying a flag, the thing was pointed at me! lol

Ok, that pretty much seals it for me.  When does sign up for next year begin!?

Glad everyone had a good experience.  When you say the roads were rough, are we talking pot holes or rough pavement surface?

Like wrinkles in the road at 10 foot intervals, that felt like going over broomsticks. Ouch, that was bumpy and annoying. There were two sections like this that lasted for a while, maybe 5 or 10 minutes. Other than those sections, the roads were smooth, so I would not let that stop you from doing this race. No big potholes that I recall. There were a couple that were marked with orange chalk, so easy to avoid. Lots of bright orange arrows on the road, and volunteers waving bright orange flags at turns.

Yes, and I loved the ECU girls. They were so friendly and cheerful!

I talked to a non BT guy who did the race. He loved it. Comments similar to Carol's. He praised the FS series folks and really like that the race was small.

Basically what Carol said.  There were several areas where it was very bumpy, ripples in the road.  They have started repaving, so there were some nice spots as well.  Scenery wise the ride was nice, it was well marked, and they had 2 aid stations, of which I only needed one.

The run course was nice going along the waterfront and over the bridge, and the water girls/directors were very nice as well.

I thought the water temp was about perfect, air was a little cold in the AM though.

I told Carol that I needed to redefine the word "smooth" since the fellow who won was quoted in the Sunday paper as saying the roads were smooth.  It is a different type of rough than the white lake seams, though there is a stretch of about a mile or so that has some really nice ones.  The worst part was the portion of 264 that we rode.  I thought my teeth were going to rattle out of my head.  If they pave that I will contribute money.

Swim was great, run was really good.  We ran through downtown along Stewart Parkway and there were people everywhere to cheer you on.  Much better idea than the original route. I hope they use that run course for the Olympic next year, even though there isn't much shade on it.

I plan on doing this half again.
