Subject: Racing shorter distance 9 weeks before goal race ?
I'm trying to plan our my race schedule for summer 2011 and I would like to get 2 tri's in this, my first year of doing tri's, but with such a short summer schedule here in Canada it's hard to have 2 races with 16 weeks seperation.

Has anyone ran a shorter race during their 16 or 20 week training program before? Is this a bad idea?

My goal race is the 1000 Island Triathlon where I want to run an Olympic distance I but would also like to get a race in earlier in the season and I was thinking of doing the Ottawa Riverkeeper Triathlon Sprint distance which is 9 weeks before.

NOTE: This is the program I'm planning to follow to train for the Olympic distance race. 20 Week Olympic 2x Balanced

Thanks,
Shawn

Nothing wrong with that at all.  People do it all the time.  Just adjust the plan a little during that week and call the race a good training day.  Enjoy!

Won't be an issue at all.  The race will be help on a build week right before a reduction week so go hard and have fun.  If you're the type to be a sticker on the weekly volumes, take some time off of the weeks long bike and add some to the mid week run to cover weekend long run reduction.

I actually think it's ideal.  Shorter races help with speedwork, nutrition testing, and keeping a competitive edge.  Also a good way to see how the training is coming together.  And that's why we train so much, to have fun racing!

I don't think that's a problem. I'm planning Olympics on back to back weekends next summer. One is the AG nationals and the other is the new England club championships. I may not perform to 100 percent on the second weekend , but I think I could be at 90-95 percent. 9 weeks, especially with a sprint distance is a non-issue.
