I don't really understand the music thing for training.

Have you heard ANY of the Rocky Training Montages? =)

You make very good points. Sometimes I like silence or the sound of my footsteps, other times I wanna rokk.

i use an mp3 player on my runs (and i agree with possum on the biking thing at least - dangerous! on solo runs i use it but keep the volume low so i can hear folks coming up behind me).

a friend who is doing her first outdoor tri this weekend just asked me about this. she said she couldn't imagine running without it. i told her what some have said - race day energy makes it different. plus, if your ears are plugged, you won't hear that 'hey, you're doing GREAT' from other folks...and you'll be less likely to say it to other people. leave the mp3s at home on race day.

I was kinda concerned about that too so I decided to go for a "dress rehearsal" run this morning without the tunes. Turns out I had one of my best runs yet...8:45 minute miles (go me!) for 5 miles instead of the usual 9:30-10 minute miles. Was it the Wheaties or what? I've always relied on some rockin' music to get me through the "suck factor" when running but it turned out to be pretty much okay without the music. Boy I hope I can duplicate this come Saturday!

But my spouse is a pathologist. That means she does autopsies for a living. And the stories she comes home with scare me to the point of this neurosis...

Just please, at least, keep the volume low enough so that you have your wits about you--

Perhaps just me, but about 3 weeks out from any major race, I leave the mp3 player at home. It's good to suffer a bit out there and mentally rehearse my race.

OK Training with headphones is one thing, and I'll save my opinions of that for another time. Suffice to say that I look at it as a corralary to helmet wearing. BUT headphones in races is a subject that really steams my grits.

Section 3.4(i) of the USAT rules

Unauthorized Accessories. No participant shall, at any time during the event, use or wear a hard cast, headset, radio or any other item deemed dangerous by the Head Referee. Any violation of this Section shall result in a variable time penalty.

For Pete's sake folks, get over the headphone thing. In a race you are not alone, there are hundreds (maybe thousands) of others on the course at the same time. You have a responsibility to make sure you are exquisitely aware of what's goiong on around you at all times so that you don't pose a hazard to others. Fast runners may be  coming up behind you, fast cyclists too. You need to be aware of them as soon as possible, like when you HEAR their footsteps or when you HEAR their tires on the pavement. This does not even take into account the traffic (most tris are held on open roads) or the necessity to hear instructions from race officials and volunteers. Why on earth would you choose to potentioally endanger your fellow competitors?

someone said (many times)

"Call me a rebel, but I wear mine anyway. Hearing my paniting and my feet hitting the ground is pure torture. It's not like I was planning to win anyway and I already have my T-shirt. If I get DQ'd for my radio...so be it! "

This is the single-most inconsiderate and selfish statement I have ever heard anyone make about a triathlon. For shame. you would potentially endanger me, and everyone else in a race (remember people do get hurt, and occaasionally die in races) because ....."I already have my T-shirt"......I think you need to really reconsider participating in races if that's your attitude.

Lets review.....

1. Wearing headphones is against the rules

2. It is inconsiderate at best, and potentially dangerous to yourself and others

3. Do you really need a #3?

Don't do it.

I love my iPod on training runs but come race time it's a big no no.

I know I'm a dork but I sing cadance in my head while I run in races.  Kind of keeps my feet moving when they start to get tired.

I knew the rule about no headphones from reading my USAT rule book cover to cover, but I never once did a training run without it. I really wish I had and I hope that other newbies like me learn from that little mistake in the article! I was glad to not be lost in my own world during the actual race, but it seriously increased the suck factor of the run. Especially since the run is my weakest sport.

Wookiee - 2005-07-31 4:46 PM  The value of the time to myself to think and sort out ideas and problems whether while running or cycling or swimming is just too good to pass up.

This is the whole reason I exercise. It is my required "by myself" time that keeps me from being completely unbearable. However, I do love my music for indoor workouts.  TVs at the gym offer no distraction from the dreadmill for me.

Just out of curiosity. How is wearing headphones while running going to hurt someone? Are they going to run so close to me they tangled in the wire and break a nail?

yeah, that's it, that's exactly what it is....

NOT.

If you can't hear, you have no idea what's going on around you. Say you need to slow down, move to the side of the road, stop or any other sudden movement-- runners behind you will be very pissed if you do any of those things right in front of them, and with your music on, you have no idea who or what is going on around you, and it is very dangerous. You also can't hear bikes that may be coming, or cars, and your reaction time will be slower since usually the sound is before the sight. So mostly you hurt yourself, but speaking as a driver, it is quite scary when a runner comes bolting out of a trail rockin' out with no clue that there are cars around. Or when I ride my bike on a multi use trail and I try to yell to a runner that I am pproaching "on your left" and they can;t hear me, and then freak out when I pass.

Lets say....just say.... that a much faster runner is coming upon you from behind, and lets say that said runner is moving at a 5:30 pace (that's around 11mph), and because you don't know he/she is there you swerve into his/her path and WHAMMO! someone's going to get hurt. This is not that outlandish a situation, especially when there are relay teams.

I'm not even going to mention cars, or bicycles.

I can't run with music. I like to listen to the birds and the wind and what not. Also if I try to listen to music I may get hit by a cyclist and so forth.

I used to run with music all the time. But then all of the discussions about what makes a woman a more likely target for attack started up and I decided to do away with them. I would run for long distances along our rail trails with the headphones on and I couldn't hear anything. When a couple of women were attacked on our trails in broad daylight last summer, I vowed to give the headphones up for good.

Since starting to ride bikes, I have to tell you, I hate coming up behind someone running or on roller blades who are listening to music because they usually get so startled when you ride past them. I always yell "on your left" but they don't hear me. And with headphones on, some of these people go into some sort of zone which makes them zig zag all over the trail. It is dangerous.

I started running 5 km races when I was still training with music. I found that I couldn't race with the music on. It just didn't work for me. So you may find that it isn't so bad racing without music.

In races you can talk to other people unless you are seriously trying to place in an AG and face it, most of us aren't.

When I started running more seriously last spring, I *had* to get a mp3 player. Now I can't even find it. I ran with it for most of the summer. But when autumn came and the daylight began to wane before I could run, I had to forego it in the interest of safety.

No way would I race with it. But, then again, I'm a Chatty Cathy at races and probably all the other racers wish I had one so I'd stop talking to them. :P Little do they know that I tend to sing along, and clap my hands and snap my fingers as well.

I've met some of the most amazing people at my races, just by striking up a little conversation. But, then again, I've never been considered SHY.

I don't think you seem to be in the minority at all on this, several folks have backed you up on the subject of training with headphones, and everyone seems to agree that racing with headphones is downright silly. And although I continue to believe that running with headphones is a manageable risk, I appreciate it when people remind me to think about other perspectives.

I'm starting to reconsider training runs with my headphones. Maybe I'll see if I can take some long runs without musical assistance.

I always ran with music around town. This weekend I tried to run without my MP3 Player and because I concentrated on my running and breathing more instead of the music I was able to run farther and faster.

When I wrote the article, I had no idea I'd be stiring up a controversy! I almost feel guilty, now, that I love my iPod on my runs! I would like to qualify it like this...I don't wear it when I cycle (I motorcycle too and two wheels + earphones is just not bright). I don't usually train in highly trafficked areas, I keep the volume low, and I REALLY don't like running so I need the help with the suck factor!!! I get why it is a USAT rule to not use them, I just wish I had practiced without my "crutch" a few times.

I will probably change it 10 more times by friday though. I am learning to embrace change

Running is not something you auto love unless you are a rabbit like my eldest. It's something you fall in love with slowly over time, as you get better at it. I know the iPod keeps your mind off the fact you would rather be getting your toenails ripped out my angry gerbils but if you don't listen to music your mind goes to other things. You also notice nature more.

The only danger is stupid songs getting stuck in your head. I already posted about Wiggles From HE!! last week and the infamous "Fruit Salad, Yummy, Yummy" 5 miles.

Believe me. I hated it at first. Wear it sometimes. There is nothing wrong with it (and sometimes I blast the volume, especially when a good Dick Dale or Godsmack tune comes on) just be able to do without it too.

Don't worry about poo stirring with a big stick. Sure it smells sometimes but you get a better mix that way.

BTW... the avatar? That is the funniest thing I have ever seen. That poor cat.

This is how you know your BF loves you. He buys the picture of the swimmer cat after your first tri and let's you hang it in the bedroom. My alter ego is a cat. I LOVE this photograph.
