Anyone had this? Anyone even heard of it? I never did until now. My doc thinks I have one, and from where my pain is and the type of pain, I would be surprised if I DON'T. Is it automatic surgery? It doesn't sound too evasive.

definitely NOT automatic surgery. In fact, surgery should be a very last resort, as not many folks do it...let alone do it well. Unlike knee scopes, hip scopes are far less common and more difficult.

I have several tears in both hips, an treat them with PT and strength training.

I was also just diagnosed with this.  Went in for an MRI for a possible stress fracture of the femoral neck and came out diagnosed with a labral hip tear.  I've been taking it EASY for the past few weeks (swimming only) and its started to feel better but tried to run against yesterday and it HURTS!  A burning pulling sensation way up in my inner hip area.  I'm going to give it a few more weeks but I'm likely going to have to have surgery, which is a huge bummer.  My doctor says that some people have tears their entire life and it doesnt bother them but I'm one of the unlucky ones.  I dont have a lot of faith in my doc here in Boise so I'm going to try and get a second opinion from another doc.  And then I'm willing to travel to find a specialist for this - it doesnt look like many docs have experience with this type of surgery.

Thanks. I'll have my MRI tomorrow...my chiropractor is actually the own who is ordering it. He knows of someone, sounded like a surgeon, who does it and is good. But I was kind of like, do I go with him or do I take the time time to get a second opinion. My chiro is a great doctor and very well known in the tri/running community, so he is credible. He also is not one to refer to other types of treatment, which really worries me, because if he thinks it's something he can't treat, he's probably right!

I guess I'll know tomorrow.

I know that you can have it and not realize it, but can you make it worse? Mine has actually gotten worse in post season!? WTF? I've been having nagging IT band problems which makes me wonder if it's all connected.

Yes, my doctor thinks that my IT band issues are probably related and that my gait has probably been off for a while because of the tear, thus causing the IT band issues.

My doc also told me that you cant make it worse but the pain is bad enough that I'm not able to run.  I'm not sure if my pain is from the labral tear or from tendonitis of my hip flexors (since some people have tears and go through life pain-free).  So, if it is just tendonitis then I can make it worse.  That (and the pain) is why I havent been doing any running.  I can also really feel it when I bike and have been riding super easy on the trainer.

There is some sort of shot that you can get to diagnose for sure that your pain is from the cartilage tear and not something else.  I havent done it yet because I wanted to see if I could just deal with/work through the pain.  I'll probably do it a couple more weeks.

Good luck tomorrow!  After learning more about labral hip tears, I'm really wishing that I "only" had a stress fracture instead.

Have you gone to PT for the issue? I wouldn't say mine has CURED it--certain things still can aggrivate it--but it has drastically improved the situation.

Lots of core (nips to knees) work, stretching, and strengthing, along with proprioception work. You'd be surprised at how making all of your other parts work better helps take the strain off the labral tears. It will also help with the tendonitis and IT band issues.

Honestly, a weak and/or imbalanced core both causes and exacerbates SO many issues--esp. for runners--it's amazing. Core issues (and the problems they can cause) will never be solved fully by rest--you can take all the time off you want, but eventually, when you resume, they can come back.
