Saw this article on MSNBC and I was wondering what others feel. I have not had a chance to look at the studies they are citing but the sources seem credible at first glance.

I am wondering if I should even get more multi's when my current bottle runs out, truthfully I do not notice much of a difference but I have also not paid that much attention.

Any of our medically minded folks want to chime in on this?

(ps. I did a search to see if this had been discussed yet but came up empty so if it has please direct me there!)

OK, so they fail to prevent disease. There are still valid reasons to take them.

I take them because I am anemic, and I am not as vigilant as I should be about diet. I have always viewed a vitamin as a dietary supplement only, and nothing more. It supplements my regular diet.

I don't know about anyone else, but since I've started taking a naturally derived multivitamin my Achilles tendinitis has actually been healing better/faster and I feel I recover better from workouts, too.  It might just be in my head that it's the supplements that are helping, but I haven't changed anything else to make me think otherwise.

I take a multi every day...for the price it's cheap insurance in case I'm not getting everything out of my diet.

I've taken a multi-vitamin everyday since my heart surgery ten years ago at the direction of my cardiologist.  Specifically Centrum Silver which has a low percentage of vitamin K, which counteracts my Coumadin.

From my understanding of my quick read of the article this is more applying to regular already healthy people. It does say there are reasons to take a multivitamin or other vitamins such as pregnancy, health issues etc so it is a bit of a different scenario for someone with a condition such as heart disease or anemia etc to take one.

I think the conclusion of this article is more along the lines of it might not hurt you but there is no evidence that it helps either.

There are also a lot of studies of individual nutrients that show correlation with various disease reduction.  Perhaps with a multi, and eating reasonably well, you're getting too much of a few things, which is just as bad as getting not enough.

For instance- Selenium.  did you get your 70mcg today?  How would you know?  Low levels of Selenium ARE correlated with increased cancer rates... but then again, so are HIGH levels.  So, did you eat a handful of brazil nuts?  then don't take your multi.

Personally- I'd like to read the actual study results, because in my experience, the news reports often state the exact opposite of what the study really indicated.

Take vitamin D.
Take a good fish oil
maybe a multi- I'd say that the jury's still out.  I think that a lot of the original benefit of them has gone away as so much of our food supply has been fortified.  Our grains and cereals are loaded with B's and Folic Acid, our milk with D, A, Calcium, even our OJ has D and Calcium.  Overall- these are probably good trends.
