Subject: Running Shoe Toe Pain Question
I am running in a pair of Pearl Izumis. My previous pair of shoes were PI's also, but of a diffrent model. Both pair flet extremely good except I would get a pain in my second toe on my left foot, in either pair of shoes. There seems to be plenty of room in the toe box, in width, height, and length. Any ideas of what the problem could be?

Where in the toe are you getting the pain?

Is it a type of numbness? I had an issue with my big and second toes hurting/going numb a while back. Turns out it was as simple as loosening up the shoes, I guess there was reduced blood flow? Maybe this helps?

Yes, it is. I really thought that I had them loose enough. I'll try and see though.

Thanx!

I just got sized for new shoes this weekend (the whole computer and video analysis). I've worn 8.5's for over 20 years now. They confirmed my foot was an 8.5. Then they promptly got me 9-9.5's to try on and told me the reason for the blackening toenail on my 2nd toe was because 8.5's are too small. I bought 9's, ran in them this morning and they feel great.

They mentioned specifically that going downhill can put the squeeze on your toes. Not sure if this is your issue, but maybe something to think about.

Funny timing of this tread but I started wearing my Pearl Izumis around this week and my left big toe has been going numb. Mostly, the later half. I do notice that the lacing system puts a lot more pressure on the top of my foot which I think is contributing to loss of blood flow.

Does the problem occur with other shoes?  If it's happening in more than one shoe, it could be your toe...not the shoe.

And agree with monkeyclaw.  In almost every shoe other than running (basketball, casual, work, etc), I'm an 8 or 8.5.  Running shoes I'm almost always a 9...and I wouldn't have know it unless the lady at the LRS told me to get a 9...I would have got the 8.5 if I bought the shoes on my own.

when I started as a marathon runner, I was fit using the "thumb" method..  You want a thumb's width distance from the tip of hte shoe to the top of your big toe...  this put me in a 1/2 size larger running shoe which is an 8..  my normal shoe size is 7.5 and it has worked for me for 6 years...   If you can find a running-specific store, they can usually help you...  I figure you might already now about these guys..

Thanks again all. I wore a size 10 for ever. First trip ( years ago) to Running Store revealed that I am 10.5. I am now in an 11. there "seems" to be plenty of room in the toe box, certainly between the tip of my toe and the tip of the shoe ( at least a thumb's width). I will try to loosen the laces a lil' more and see what happens. So far it has only happened in the PI's and only when running. My older pair are now my daily wear shoes, and don't seem to give me any problems, now, but did when they were my running shoes. I also have lace locks in the older shoes ( and did when I ran in them) but not in the newer ones.

( And yes Babe, not only am I aware of Dothan Runners Club...I-R-1. Wink)
