Swim
Comments: I started the swim, relaxed, and felt like I was swimming fast. Actaully I am a slow swimmer, and with all the swimming practice I have done, I was a little bummed about my swim time which was slower than Ralph's Swim time. What would you do differently?: Become a better swimmer for goodness sakes! Transition 1
Comments: I smoked through this transition. Because we were the VERY LAST WAVE of the day, they gave us the best bike rack placement. SWEEEEET! What would you do differently?: Nada Bike
Comments: When I did my first HIM, I averaged 17.3MPH on the bike, this race I averaged 20.6MPH on the bike. I owe the improvement to the excelllent coaching and workouts from my coach M2 (Michael McCormack). I have really improved on the bike, and I feel very confident now. I kept a high cadence throughout the ENTIRE bike course (averaged 93 RPM's), and I switched gears constantly, so as to remain in an optimal gear. I passed som many people, it was sort of comical. I don't remember getting passed on the bike by anyone. What would you do differently?: When I got off the bike, I was absolutly blown away with how quick I got through this course. I was stunned, amazed, and incredulous. While I know I can improve a lot more, I really did kick ass on the bike section. Transition 2
Comments: I was like greased lightening thorugh this BAD BOY, NUFF SAID! Run
Comments: I got my running legs quickly, and was worried that with a good bike split, maybe I'd be toast on the run. Well, I was fine on the run, and ran a nice half marathon. Would have been nice if they included the mile splits though. Post race
Event comments: OK, I am a little bit over zealous, and don't want to get too crazy, BUT, this was my 2nd HIM. I knocked 40 minutes off my Ralph's time, and it was all on the bike. I swam and ran the same, but the HUGE difference was how fast I was on the bike. When I crossed the finish line, I couldn't believe my watch. They posted finish times right away, and it was right, I came in at 5 hours, 5 minutes. Basically, I need to find around 10 minutes improvement for a chance for a Kona Slot. Last year at Vineman, this time would have been a potential Kona slot. Anyway, the goal is to try for a Kona slot next year (2006) in Wisconsin when I age up to 50. (Sounds old eh??) My wife Kim decided to be a Vineman Volunteer, so she started her day by gettin up w/me at 3:45AM. She spent the morning body marking, and being generally nervous for me as she always is before I race. That way I don't have to be nervous. I went back to my car after getting my transition set up, and listened to some Bob Marley and snoozed.
