Subject: Recovery from Ironman - how long?
This must have been discussed before, I just couldn't find it.

So, here's a question for you-all who have done IM's before, how much recovery?  How long did it take you to get back into regular workouts?

Intensity?
Duration?
What did you do that worked?
What did you do that you wish you'd done differently?
oh, what is your chronological score (how young are you)?

Thanks
I'm almost three weeks past IMFL and I'm trying to determine if my body is telling me it needs more recovery, or if it's telling me it wants to be lazy. Tongue out

Honestly, it depends how fit you are in general. The more fit, the shorter the recovery.

I waited about 5 days then went swimming.
Waited 7 days then started in on 8 mile runs again.

Seems to have worked for me.

I think it varies with age, fitness and injury.    The younger, fitter and less injured you are the eaiser it is.  In general swimming helps me recover from biking and running so I went back to that quickly but not intensely.  Biking come next...running will be last...

Good questions....

Here is a link to a previous thread that has some good insights and also so articles on the subject.

I did same IM as you and I'm not fully recovered yet. I like November IM as weather here sure feels like off season no push to get back to training quickly as it is tri season compared to doing something like IMLP in July.

I'm hoping I recover faster this one than first but I am older and coming off a year with some injury issues.

Hope you recover well Jasha!

Thanks guys.
Thanks Kathy for the link, I knew it must have been discussed before.

The articles from active.com, ironman.com, and endurance nation were quite useful.

Training and recovery would probably be simple if it weren't affected by real life and injures (and age )

I went swimming about a week after Florida. I got back on the bike for the first time yesterday. My minor stress fracture is gonna keep me from running until mid December, more than likely I'll just wait until January to start running again. I'd like to get back in the pool and on the bike more but school is pretty hectic right now, graduating next week.

I ran a marathon a month after my first IM. It felt great and was a personal best by 33 minutes.
I am 34 and have been doing endurance sports for about 10 years, but definitely ramped it up several notches this year.

The only place I noticed my lack of recovery was in the weight room. For a month or two afterward, when I would try to do squats, I would experience some muscle or tendon failure in and around my hamstrings and knees.

My recovery was very quick.  I was jogging down stairs two days after the race.  Four days post-race, I did a one-hour road bike ride at my highest average power ever.  And I set a 5k PR 9 days after the race.  Recovery is much faster than an all-out marathon.

About 4 days before a bike ride; 5 days before a run; and 1 week before a swim. Probably could have started earlier, but wanted to let my body heal. Age 52. Good luck.
