Subject: OWS Tampa Area
I live in Land O' Lakes in Pasco County. I was curious if anyone knows of any OWS groups in the area? I have never trained in open water and am looking for a group to learn with. Anyone have any insight?

The St. Pete Mad Dogs do an open water swim during the summer months.

There is a group swim on Tuesday nights in Clearwater and a Friday morning swim in Dunedin.  They'll both probably start up again early next year.

That would be one hell of a drive from LoL to St Pete. Id think Tarpon Springs or Palm Harbor or something would work out better for you. I never could understand why Mad Dogs did almost everything on the extreme south side of St Pete.

i cant understand it either - maybe the majority of their members (or founders) are from the Tierra Verde area or they just like driving down to Ft desoto

For the LoL area, I thought there would be some river (spring) swimmers...

I'm Land O' Lakes too, and there isn't a lot of good OWS opportunities around here.
We usually go to a friend's house in Odessa and use the lake they live on.

I've done more OWS practice at Anclote River Park than anywhere else. It's about 125m from one end of the roped-off swim area to the other, but there is often a strong tidal current. Near the full moon, it can take 6-7 minutes to go across against the tide, then less than a minute for the return trip.

I will have to check it out. I have lived in the area my entire life, but have never noticed the areas to open swim!
