Some say they're not needed because you don't do flips in open water. Well, you don't have walls to push off either, and don't take a break every 25 yards with an open turn.

I say learn them, use them. When you're in the pool, swim like a swimmer.

They disorient me and make me motion sick.  I don't do them.  Sealed

I say if you're comfortable using them, use them. If you don't give a darn, don't. If you never got the hang of them, don't use them.

I only use them when I am racing my son.  I get a light headed when I do too many.

I just started doing them. Much easier to do than I thought. I spent many hours (months, a year or so) doing open turns, then started doing an underwater open turn. After many hours (months, another year or so) of that I decided to try a flip turn. It was surprisingly easy for me and now (for the past few weeks) I do them exclusively when in the pool. I find it helps keep a steady rhythm going , though I am still working out the kinks with timing the breathing. My next scheduled race is my first pool tri and flip turns are allowed, so, why not!

I will add that I used to argue against learning them, though not against doing them. I just didn't want to take up training time learning a skill I would not use directly in open water. Turns out it really didn't take me long at all to learn though I've not mastered it by any stretch.

x2

If your goal is to become a better overall swimmer, do flip turns.

I don't think learning flip turns is as important to swimming as learning to track stand is to being a better cyclist! Laughing

Is this thread a joke or are we really going to go around and around (no pun intended) about flip turns for another week?

I say learn to track stand first.

I do them because they are fun.
It makes pool swimming a little less nasty.........ugh....I hate swimming in a pool.
Also helpful to keep the rhythm going .

I grew up a competetive swimmer so I do them kind of out of habit but they aren't something that I work on anymore.

I say do them.  I haven't been swimming long and I was hesitant to start using them because it was so hard to breathe when doing them.  Someone at Master's told me to start using them and I did.  Not sure if it's coincidence or not but I started seeing bigger improvements around the time that I started doing flip turns.   Now, breathing seems so much easier.  I think it's helped me.

I think doing a flip turn mimics constant swimming more so than an open turn where you have a chance to come up for a breath.

What are your thoughts on flipturns?

They're pretty tough to do on a bike!!! ... or, at least, tough to complete!

I just do tailwhips on the bike...while in aero!  It helps me keep up my cadence when doing 180 turns. Surprised
