Subject: C02 cartridges and small pumps and reinflating the TUBE

My day off and 3 days till Olympic Distance Tri.  Checking out the tires and practicing changing a flat.  Glad I did.

1.  My little hand pump takes a long time to inflate.  Get up to 80 PSI approx.  Is that the norm?  or should I have just kept pumping away?

2.  When I reinflated one tube, I noticed a bulge by the stem.  So let some air out and saw that the bead was not all the way in.  Did some massaging of the tire and tube and than it was ok.  I was using my big floor pump that time.

3.  While practicing on my rear tire and tube, during reinflation with hand pump, bent and broke the stem in the valve.  OOPS.  How did that happen?  Had to find a small something to poke in to deflate.

4.  When I put the rear tire back onto bike.  Was so off that the brakes were rubbing in the open position.  Had to loosen and rejiggle the tire to get a proper seating.....

5.  Used up to C02 cartridges, using  an Innovation Pro gizmo.  Same thing like hand pump, seemed to only get up to 80 psi

Lessons learned.  Practice is good.   Good to keep an eye on the weird bulge on reinflation.  Got to fight trying to get tire and tube back on rim.  (can't imagine what it would be like, huffing and puffing in the middle of nowhere during a race with sweat in my eyes and the clock ticking.....PRACTICE?)       Make sure I have at least two tubes.  Find out about stronger hand pump and more bigger c02 Cartridges.

Now I need to go out and ride the bike to make sure I didn't screw anything up.

16g CO2 cartridges ought to get you close to 120psi.

I love my Topeak Road Morph, which morphs into a mini floor pump and can get up to 120psi without pumping all day. Also has a built in gauge, which is nice.

that's actually pretty good. there are some hand pumps that have a switch that goes from volume to pressure, but even then 80 PSI is pretty good. a blown tube on race day sucks. that's why i keep my Armadillos on at all times. but then i'm only doing long distance

it really, really sucks. i've never used a CO2 cartridge but i don't expect much time saving from it compared to pumping. maybe 1 min? i'm running Armadillos now all the time because a blown tube will negate any speed advantage that a race tire will give you. it's a gamble. now if i had a chase car...

How about two links:

http://www.topeak.com/products/pump_014.html

$35 here at performance, but I know I paid less than that on sale:

And do you carry that instead of CO2? Less junk to haul around?

That's easy to do, but also easy to avoid. When reseating the tire after changing the tube, start at the valve stem, and push the stem up from the underside of the rim as you seat the tire.

I carry that on my road bike. I've seen way too many multi-flat rides where others I was with did not have enough cartridges to get them through. So I have the frame pump, two tubes, a patch kit and a cell phone. The frame pump is unobtrusive and porbably weighs as muvh as the cell phone.

I have the CO2 and a single spare on my race bike. Figure if that doesn't get me home I'm destined for the SAG wagon.
