I've heard that getting a Brazilian wax will take 5 minutes off a HIM swim time. True or false?

What should I expect the nutrition to look like along the course? How many nutrition stations will there be on the bike and run course and what will they offer? I don't care what kind of drink or food they offer, I'm more interested to know how many stations and how they give stuff it to you. Do you grab bicycle watter bottles along the bike course? What do you do with your empty bottles? Do they hand out GU kinds of supplements or should I plan to carry everything I'll need from T1 and T2?

There are 4 aid stations on the bike and about 1 every mile on the run. 

Bottled water, with nozzles and Gatorade (in 2010, in 2011, I am sure it will be powerade or the IM drink) are available on the bike and are handed to you (no bags).  I think they had bananas as well.  Get used to grabbing stuff hand-to-hand and dropping trash in the designated zone (or get a potential penalty for littering on the course).  The stations have a lot of volunteers, so just slip in, slow down and grab-and-go (otherwise stay to the left if you dont need anything and pedal on through).

On the run, the have paper cups of water, gatorade, power bars, gels, and bananas as well as ice.  They are pretty well stocked with volunteers at the stations so there should be no concerns getting what you need.

X2 to what Jon said.

As for how to handle the fill-ups on the bike, I've got an aero bottle that sits between my aerobars and I have 3 other cages (1 on the down tube and 2 behind my seat).  For an HIM I leave my back ones empty and then take a bottle with me on the down tube.  When I hit an aid station, I'll grab 2 for my back cages and then an extra one that I'll empty into my aero bottle.  If you only have one cage, I'd suggest looking at either a second one or an aero bottle.  Its better to have left over liquids than it is not enough.  If you only have 2, then take either a cheap bottle that you can throw away, or you can go to the store and buy yourself some Gatorade or water that are in those sport bottles which you can put in your cage - that way you can toss it and grab theirs.

They'll have some sort of Gu or Powerbar gels on both the bike and run, so you could get away with not bringing anything, but I wouldn't recommend it.  I'd at least take something on the bike to get you to that first aid station.  You'll want to try to eat something right away because it'll likely have been quite awhile since you're last solids.

One thing to consider (for the HIM/IM distance especially) is that fueling on the bike/run is very specific to your body's needs/sensitivities. If you're new to tri's, practice on your long rides and runs different nutrition plans to see what works and use that on race day.

For the HIM distance bike, I have two bottles ready on the bike in T1: 1 with Gatorade+Carbopro and 1 with water. Gels are in my bento box. Unless it's absurdly hot+humid, this is all I need on the bike. IMO, the aid stations at Ironman 70.3 events -- because they pack so many people on a small course -- are a crash disaster place. Athletes are swerving, stopping suddenly, unclipping or not and dropping bottles all over the place. I stay to the left, don't stop, and get the heck out of dodge.

I live in MI and can't wait for the snow and ice to melt and the temps to hit 50 so I can start my real bike training. Determining nutritional needs is one of my number one goals this year....especially liquid needs.

You might find peace of mind if you follow a training plan.  BT offers them as do lots of other websites.  I like this because it helped me to figure out if I was on target when I got the starting line of my first half.  In fact, Steelhead 2010 was my first half!  I loved the experience and race.  I'm signed up for 2011 as well!

I see no need to set up the night before for this one.  Unless your the obsessive type.

Ah, I've got this one. My buddy and I rode from our cars one year. I had a backpack, everything stayed put like it should have. He had an athletic bag, or transition bag of some sort AND a pump (why is a great question), but ended up having the bag swing around and get caught in the front wheel, launching him. He started and finished, but his wrist was jacked.

You just gotta be super careful not to ride with so much gear it puts you at risk. Or have practiced it, weird as that sounds....

A lot!  Usually the have each AG go off in there own wave and if there are a lot of people in one particular AG, the will split the AG based on last name.  Last year, my AG (25-29) was split, and I was the last wave to go off.  There is usually 5-10mins between waves.  There is no specific order for start times and they seem to change from year to year.  I can't seem to find the starts waves from 2010.

Steelhead will be your first ever triathlon?!  I'd encourage you to sign up for at least 1 if not 2 sprint tri's before Steelhead.  Going from zero to HIM (half ironman) is huge.  Individually you might be fine in each of the disciplines, but putting them all together back to back is a whole 'nother beast.  Additionally you've got the two transitions to deal with.  Getting a few sprints under your belt first will help you with this.  I did Steelhead in my first year of triathlon too, but I also did 3 sprints prior to the HIM and let me tell you, it was an eye opener. 

As for the swim, its a point to point course.  Depending on the direction of the current the swim will either start out 1.2 miles south of Jean Klock park, or 1.2 miles north.  Its a beach start and you swim out about 100yds, then straight down the beach.  The depth at that point is approx 12'.  You can see the bottom the whole way - its nice and clear.  Regarding a plan, you might want to look for some plans here on BT.  If you've never done an open water swim before, you'll want to get out to a local lake with some friends (don't do it alone) and get in as much practice as you can.  If you're in the Metro area, there's a group of us who go out to Island Lake almost every week to swim at either Spring Mill Pond or Trout Lake.  One of the biggest challenges with an open water swim is sighting and making sure you're going straight.  If swimming is a weak point with you, then I think what I'd suggest focusing on is just your endurance and making sure you can finish the swim portion under the cutoff.

Felix - there are no set times right now.  A little later in the season we'll be picking a standard day (its been on Thur the last few years) to meet at around 5:30-6pm to both swim and ride.  In the meantime, just keep an eye on the postings here in BT.  There's always someone doing something.  In fact, Mike Woods just posted something for this Saturday.  If there's a time that you want to head out, then post it here and you're likely to  get some takers to meet up with you.  I happen to live right next to Kensington so its pretty easy for me to get out even at the last minute as long as I don't have something else going on.

Just curious- what type of plan are you using that has a 3.5 week taper?
