I am thinking of switching to a droid phone from my Blackberry but wonder if the droid plays well with Outlook.  Although I do not use Outlook Enterprise is still do not want to leave Outlook. I also plan to continue with Verizon. Any info or personal experiences any one has had with this would be appreciated.  Thanks!

I think it depends on the version of Outlook.  The hospital I work at uses a very very very very old version of outlook, that does not synch.  But then they stopped using it altogether for our scheduling in the last 6-7 months, using some extremely inconvenient scheduling program that I hate hate hate.

Syncing with an Exchange server or not (like to Gmail)?

You can check this out for getting to an Exchange server (but you may need to contact your business/Enterprise IT support regarding if you need to setup/config to a Good Technology server first to allow syncing to their corporate Exchange server) -

I sync my Incredible with our webmail server and do not have any issues.  Mail arrives almost instantly, calendar and contacts sync without issue as well.

The guys at Verizon wouldn't tell me this since it negates the need for the extra $15 they charge for exchange services.

Same here, it's pretty straight forward.

Not 100% sure what they do with those exchange services they offer.

And hey you in the Seahawks jersey, don't I know you?

The droid does NOT sync with Outlook. Unless you can link directly to the email server, you're screwed .

My Droid phone (Samsung Galaxy) syncs nicely with my work mail (Microsoft Exchange server - i.e. I use Outlook at work), my Gmail, my home mail (POP/SMTP) account, and even my hotmail (but for somer reason there is a bit of delay in my hotmail arriving - I guess microsoft and google are not on friendly terms.

My work calendar mettings and events come up nicely.

*Note, this is not syncing with outlook in any way. This is syncing with Exchange server which is a totally different (and supported) beast.

Most people using Outlook are either getting mail from Exchange (works) or from a pop3/gmail/whatever account (works). Just what non-tech generally call it even though they mean something else.

I'm been thinking about flipping from the blackberry storm to the galaxy as well. As long as all the cal/tasks/email/contacts sync I'm good with it.

Does it support any remote locking/remote wiping if stolen?

Syncing implies a lot more than receiving mail. It implies syncing things like contacts and calendars. This is not supported without android and outlook period. There are some third party apps that try, but I've had very mixed reviews from my clients.

So again, Gmail, Exchange syncing work fine (mail, contacts and calendar). Syncing with Outlook (Calendar and Contacts) is not supports directly.

I'm pretty sure remote wipe works through your gmail account.

Same here.  I set Outlook up as a secondary email and it often does not work.  I get about half of the messages incoming and often have issues sending.  I am contemplating switching to a 3rd party mail app.

BTW, I have a brand new Droid X.

I've been using k9-mail to hit my school's imap server and it works very well.  There is a bug in the stock android email app (not the gmail app) that causes sending over TLS to break if the server doesn't respond EXACTLY like it is supposed to (which yahoo/zimbra does not).

As was mentioned before, outlook is just an email client.  If you configure both outlook and your phone as imap clients, all changes will be made on the server side, thus changes made on one device will mirror to the other.
