Subject: Hal Higdon Novice 1/2 Marathon plan question
In an attempt to get some running fitness for sprint and olympic distance events I hope to complete this coming summer, I am following the Higdon novice plan for the half-marathon (for a local half in February, which will be my first ever, and longest ever run, with no real  goal other than to finish and enjoy the whole process).

I have done a bit of a search here and see a few people share my concern, which is : the plan builds up to a long run of (only) 10 miles, one week prior to the goal race. I picked the plan because it was suggested here on many threads, but wonder now if those last three miles / 5km will be a satanic torture-fest..  So, my question is : Who has followed this plan and found the last three miles to be comfortable? Should I try to be going a bit longer on the long runs, and plan to be able to cover the 13 miles prior to to event itself?

as always, thanks BT for the help

I followed that plan with a goal of going under 2hrs in a1/2 marathon.  I ended up going 1:54.  You will be fine just going the 10 miles.

Agreed, 10 miler for your long run should be fine.  Just watch your taper and final week before race!  My first marathon I worked up to a 20 miler never going 26.2 before the race and I did fine.

i used the same plan, but adjusted to fit my schedule. I ran up to 11+ for my long run. I had a stretch goal of sub 2:00, and realistic goal of 2:05 - I finished at 2:04. I wasn't able to do as much running the last few weeks and I think this hurt me, as I hurt pretty bad the last 1.5 miles. looking back through my logs my long run of 11.4 was three weeks prior to my HM, so much to early. the next few weeks, my long run was oly 6. But, that's what I had to do because of other  things. I think one more long run two weeks prior, or 10 days prior would have been perfect then a taper.

but the plan itself worked nicely. it was also my first 1/2.

I did the HH beginner HM plan in January 2008 ... started as a New Year's resolution as a non-runner and finished 1st HM in May 2008 at 1h:58 ... I thought it worked great. I still recommend HH plans to friends .... wife did her first HM on HH earlier this fall. 10 miles is a little short ... 12 would be better ... but Hal will get you across the finish line without burning out early in your training from trying to build too quickly .

So yeah ... I would say my experience is that Hal Higdon's plan pretty much rocks.

I'm using the novice 1/2 Mary plan myself right now. I extended the 12 week plan to a 16 week plan, and have a 13 mile run 3 weeks prior to the race. I'm 4 weeks in and despite having to move a few days due to extenuating circumastances, it is working well.

IMO, it also comes down to fitness level, age, fitness objectives etc.  The days of running 100 miles per week like the 80s-90s is over and there are numerous examples of people showing great success using the less is more principle in regards to distance running, including elite runners!

I ran my first HM having had a longest run of 6.5 miles.  I didn't log workouts before then but I was routinely running 4x a week, usually 2 runs of 6.5 and 2 runs of 3.25 miles.  All runs were tempo type pace or faster, close to 5K pace.  My plan heading into the HM was to run at 30=40 seconds per mile slower than my 6.5 mile average pace.  It worked perfectly and I ended up averaging only 20 seconds slower than my 6.5 mile pace.

I'm using a modified Intermediate plan right now for marathon training and like most of his plans, the long runs are 30 sec/mile slower than race pace.  Most shorter runs are at race pace up to 5K pace for intervals etc.

Based on my own experience and the experience of others, I would stick to the distance on the plan.  Like others have said, level of fitness is part of the equation.

I was pleasantly suprised at how much farther I could run havng backed off the pace.

I am using the same exact plan right now... I have been given the following advice from those that used it successfully...

1. Run the distances as depicted on the plan and fight the urge to run more because you feel good on a particular day
2. Once you get to the 10 mile mark the adrenaline and support of the crowds will get you through the last 3 miles

My goal using this plan is to complete the HM in under 2 hours... start out slow and try to negative split to the finish once I have my wind... 9:05 avg pace will get it done...

Best of luck!Laughing

I incurred the Wrath of Hal Higdon lol  He sold an ebook that was lauded as from the master, a training plan with essential information to finish your marathon, and it was an A to Z with things like Depression - gets better with exercise.  So I wrote that it was badly described and I got rained on and then all of a sudden people pop up with 4 and 5 star reviews (I was the first one).

I have my PR in the HM using the HH novice plan.  I have since done other halfs using plans that call for longer long runs and more weekly mileage and still haven't beat that PR.  I say go for it....

I trained for a half using another plan that had a long run of 12m and it went well, I felt good during and after the race no real pain, just some soreness.
I will probably try the HH plan when I start for a marathon just to see how it goes.

I loosely followed the HH 1/2 mary plan for my first two HM's.  The first I built up to 13 miles (just to make sure I could do it mentally), the second I never ran more than 11.  My second one was 10 minutes faster than my first.

You should be fine doing 10 miles, just get all your runs in.
