How in the world do you leave the shoes clipped in during T1 and run, get on your bike, and start pedaling, put your feet in your shoes, not lose time, and not wreck and kill yourself?

Just having a really hard time wrapping my mind around this concept.

It would help to actually see it done if you can't envision, go to a sprint tri and watch the leaders go through T1 to see how graceful and easy they make it look.

Yeah, takes lot of practice to be able to do it and not be a danger to yourself and others.

I know I'm not ready for it yet...

I practiced it a few times in prep for my first tri this weekend, and decided discretion is the better part of valor. I figure a few seconds lost is better than laying on the pavement with the bike on top of me!

I've seen a few tris on tv now and they showed how the pros do it. They really stay on top their shoes for quite some time. Only get in them when it is convenient.

Coming out of T1 yes, graceful, Coming into T2 after the bike NOT graceful. I think that about every third person who left their shoes clipped in the shoe popped off the bike, the volunteers had to bring them their shoe. It was funny, and it was usually the left shoe for some reason.....

I've got it all but the "get in your shoes" part..
The un-velcro, pull feet out.. pedal and dismount i've got..

I just can't see how, after I've smashed the top of the shoe against the sole when i hop on and pedal for a little while, to get my foot in. I pick my foot up off the shoe.. and it flops down.. almost upside down.. What's the trick? I have tri-specific shoes (specialized trivent) but i'm not sure how to do this without crashing and burning..

Get up to speed, reach down and grab the back of your shoe, take your foot off and slide it in (vaseline/body glide/etc helps with this), grab the strap, pull it tight and away you go. Get back up to speed and repeat...

He's right.  There's really nothing scientific about it.  Just a matter of practice.  But definitely make sure you are well underway, with enough speed to keep you from swerving all over the place.

Just wondering: What pedals are you folk using that allow your shoes to stay on top? (Not that I'm considering doing this as the few seconds I save wouldn't make a difference in where I place.)

They don't really stay on top. They flip all around. Quite funny to watch actually, when they are coming into T2.  You just gotta foot it to the top when you are going out.       ( I think I just made up a new verb.)

If there is a type I don't know of one, and it would not be practical to have a pedal move less than 180 degrees.

I have Shimano Look style pedals - an elastic around the heel and chainstay keeps the shoe upright until you step on it...

If I had a P3 I wouldn't need to worry about saving time in transition either

Elastics....Open the velco all the way up too or it will get stuck together if you ride with youfeet on the shoes for any distance.  I actually jump on and slip my feet right in.  Easier for me than clipping in but I practiced a lot before I tried it in a race.  Consider the transition area too.  If its really muddy you may want to put your bike shoes on and run in those or else you end up with sand dirt and yuckiness on the bottom of your feet for the rest of your race...can result in lots of blisters on the run as I found out the hard way.

Haven't practiced it, just plan on running barefoot from T1 to the hop on Bike zone.  Stay off to the side, so I don't have anybody riding up my butt, put shoes on and take off.   Same thing with coming in.  Stay off to side, hop off and than take shoes off........Maybe someday I'll try it.

Wahay.... I'm not the only one that uses tha marshalls as a shoe storage service!!

I leave my shoes clipped in (or somewhere near the dismount line) in T2, it does make life a lot easier in transition, but haven't risked leaving them in for T1, but I've only got road shoes with a tongue and no loop on the heel (well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!!)
