Subject: 5K and a HM on the same day
Any advice on racing two completely different races/distances on the same day?

The 5K will be at 6:30AM, while the HM will be later in the day, sometime around 2PM.

FWIW, I plan to run them both hard. Will fatigue be a factor? A 5K is so short, and I don't know how that will translate to a hard HM run.

Anything specific I should be doing in between races?

Thanks!

Yes.

If you are planning to run the 5k anywhere close to your potential, then I would expect that your pace (at best) for the half marathon would be your marathon pace.  If instead you run the 5k around half marathon pace, you should be able to recover enough to run the half marathon close to your potential.

D00d,

You can certainly run both of them, but you won't be at your best for both.

If you nail the 5K, you won't be able to run fast for the HM.  My suggestion is to either volunteer or cheerlead at the 5K and then nail the HM.  Or, run the 5K as a warm-up and race the HM.  OR bust it on the 5K and run the HM at easy long-run pace.

Why do you want to run them on the same day?

Edited to add that Doug and I have both done the "double" (5k and 10k) at the Homestretch Challenge in Roswell, but again, one of the races wasn't our best work.

A hard 5K is very hard on the body.  I really don't see the HM going very well for you if you race the 5K hard.  So fatigue is a significant factor.

I really think you need to prioritize one of the races.  I understand the temptation, as running races are really fun.

My advice:  Skip the 5K, or if you must, go the 5k easy socializing with friends, family, pretty women, etc along the way.  Then, race the HM hard.
