Subject: traffic ticket: disobeying stop sign vs impeding traffic
So I received a ticket for disobeying a stop sign many weeks ago.  (I didn't come to a full stop.)  I believe initially I was told this was a $135 fine.  I wrote the judge a pity story for a reduced fine (which then had me pitying myself but anyway), and today I received a letter saying that my ticket has been amended to "impeding traffic" and a $125 fine.  I am thankful that it was "amended" but I am just curious how much of a difference is disobeying a stop sign vs impeding traffic?  Is there really that much of a difference?  I wouldn't have/won't receive points either way.

If you admit that you didn't obey the law and come to a stop, I'm wondering why it should be excused at all?

Where there extenuating circumstances?

Why didn't you plead not guilty and go to court? You usually have a 2 minute meeting with the DA's attorney and tell them your side of it. They'll usually cut the ticket in 1/2 (at least that seems to work for speeding).

The difference is $10

When I called up the district court, the lady said that there's an "I" (or something) marked next to the violation, meaning no points attached.  But if I go to court, then that will be erased, and there's a chance I'd get the points.  She said the best thing for me to do was to write to the judge.

Unfortunately the answers you get on here will vary because traffic law is specific to your state.  In WI 'disobeying a stop sign' is technically 'failure to stop at a stop sign' and carries entirely different fines and points.  Maybe someone with some knowledge of MI traffic law/court can chime in?

But on the surface, it sounds like the only difference is $10?  Depending on your state/jurisdictions bond amounts, that might be the cheapest citation they could 'amend' your violation to?

In Michigan, Impeding Traffic is not abstracted.  This means that it is not reported to the Secretary of State, which means it is not reported to your insurance company.  You rates will not be affected.  So, you not only benefit by the $10 in the change of violations, but your insurance company wont raise your rates.
