Subject: Don Fink plan for HIM training???
I just purchased Fink's book for IMFL training plan in November.  In his book, he recommends inserting a HIM prior to the final phase of the training after approx 20 weeks.

Does this implicate that the plan would be sufficient to use for a HIM?  I am planning a half in May.  Should I do the first 20+ weeks the do the half, recover, then start the plan again for the IMFL?

Have any of you modified his plans for a half?

If you like his training plans (both intermediate and competitive include the half at week 22), and they fit in with you time and schedule wise, why not? They do train you very well for a half-iron.

The intermediate plan roughly corresponds with the beginner 20-week plan here on BT (a number of differences, but I'm talking volume-wise) and the competitive with some of the intermediate half-iron plans here.

I also think the Iron Fit plans have more cycling and less swimming than the beginner BT half iron which (IMO) prepares you better for what the half distance is like, especially if you want to do better than 'just finish' comfortably within the time limits.

finally ... if you like the plan and how it prepared you for the half, you're in a much better position to know how you might like to do it/use it/modify it, or even if you want to look to something different to prepare you for the iron distance.

I don't know the plan but do know that IM and HIM pacing are quite different. HIM is zone 3 and IM is zone 2. For me practicing race pace is key to execute a race well. If plan is a lot of zone 2 and not zone 3 work it wouldn't work for me well. Plans for IM and HIM may be similar with long workouts different in intensity and in length.

If you do a half in May after 20 weeks of an IM plan then are doing IMFL in November there is a quite a long time inbetween the races and more than I think he has 10 weeks I'm thinking.

How long is it between the HIM and IM?

Personally doing an IM plan for ~40 weeks would drive me nuts. Focus on the HIM first & train for that with a HIM plan and if you want add some cycling volume to it, then after maybe a bit of unstructured time start up with a plan in late June/July for IMFL.

You may want to post or search on the IM threads to see if someone else has asked similar question.

In case you didn't find it yet, here's the most recent thread discussing Be IronFit, with a lot of input on use for HIM
