Subject: Half IM time estimate
Hi -

I am attempting my first half IM later this spring.  My best result so far was just under 2:30 in a moderately hilly olympic.

My relative strengths, in order, are swim, run, bike.  The half IM I am doing is flat.

I know there are a lot of variables here, but what is a reasonable time goal for me in a half based on my olympic result?

Thanks for any fedback.
Mike

First time at any distance, you should have your first goal being "make it to the finish line". You can add to that "make it to the finish line just as my tank is running dry". Hard to do without the knowledge of the distance first, though.

I'd say take your best paces for your longest workouts (assuming they're longer than race distance), and combine them, then add 10 minutes.

depends how much you train.  A race a few months ago vs a race a few months from now can be a pretty big swing depending on where your coming from and how dedicated you are.

I don't subscribe with the 'just finish' your first time at a distance motto like some do.  Good to have goals imo.  Just realize if you don't get stronger on the bike it will be exposed as a weakness and limit your ability for a good time at that distance though...  Being really strong on the swim isn't going to do as much for you.

"5-5:15"

X2 plus another 15 minutes for being your first one is probably a realistic expectation.

I'm a 2.40 oly.,  and a 5.50 HIM.  I'd say 5.30 is a good goal.  Train hard and smash it...

I was just under 2:30 for an Oly when I did my first HIM, so I'll go with my time:  5:36.

I really apprecaite all the feedback.  I had 5:30 as an initial target and it sounds like I'm in the ballpark.

Thanks.

According to that I'll be able to finish my HIM in just over 5.5 hours.  It doesn't take into consideration slower paces for longer distances.

Wow. That actually wasn't too bad. I input all my data from the last time I did an HIM and it was off of my actual result by about 10 minutes.

the calculator isn't perfect and assumes quite a bit.  but it can be reasonable with in a couple of min especially for the shorter distances.

It absolutely considers the distances when outputting paces.

Put in same inputs (training volume and swim, bike and run paces) in for sprint, oly and HIM and it will give you different outputs as far as your pace...give it a try and you'll see.

Thanks again for all the great feedback.

Another thing I've gotten from this thread is that I need to do a better job of logging my training.  I've never gotten in that habit and I know it's really important, especially as I try to move up in distance.
