Any suggestions would be helpful. I have been contemplating increasing my distances from sprint tri to half ironman. To that end I can't seem to get past about 80kms without my butt killing me. This past weekend i did a 130km ride and the last 30km was all I could do to keep myself off the saddle. It is frustrating when you think the legs have lots left. I have a selle italia gel seat on a trek road bike and I don't ride aero. Until the increase in distance I have been thoroughly happy and comfortable on the seat. I am 6'3 and 200lbs.

any thoughts or experiences for a cure for a sore bum?

I got a Terry Fly, and it's helped a lot.  I have also heard rave reviews about the Arione Fi'zik.

I switched seats 3 times before I found the right seat and I also have particular shorts that are more comfortable on the longer rides.   When I felt as miserable as you did/do, that's when I opted for the new seat/shorts.  Gotta be comfortable!  Also, there is some stuff on  www.davezabriskie.com that's both helpful and friggin' hilarious.  Definately check it out.

I had big time perineum pain when I first started cycling. Now, I have good padded shorts, and lube up with Body Glide, and it has helped plenty. I can do a 60 mile ride and be okay. Granted, it's not "painless", but it's tolerable.

Make sure the bike fits properly, then ride lots and get up off the saddle for 20-30 seconds whenever you're butt starts getting sore or numb.

Thanks all, I have high end pearl izumi shorts that work well. I had the feeling that as I put on more miles, I might have to switch things up with the seat and see if that helps. The ARione certainly looks interesting. I may have to think about standing climbs more often throughout the ride in order to change it up also.
