Subject: RE: 2010 REYNOLDS Carbon ATTACK Clinchers Wheels So if this is American Idol for wheels, I'm going to channel Randy and say " You know dawg, I gotta be NO on this one". I have a set of Reynolds DV3K clinchers on my road bike, which is a 46mm model with similar carbon layup as the Attack, Assault and Strike, but uses the DT Swiss 240s hub from the higher level MV32/DV46/SD66 line-up of Reynolds wheels. I love 'em. I ride 'em everywhere. Chipseal, cobblestone, gravelpack, commuting ... 20X24 spoke durability. Everywhere. I'm 175 pounds on my first set of all carbon hoops and I have absolutely stopped worrying about durability and reliability. I like them enough that I picked up a set of 1300 gram Reynolds MV32UL 32mm deep clinchers that I am going to put on my roadie, and move the 46mm over to my tri bike. I also have a Zipp 404 toroidal rear wheel ... 58mm deep 404s are damn good wheels ... slightly heavier but more aero (ie faster ) than the 32 or 46mm deep Reynolds. I just like ride, speed, and feel of the 46mm DV3Ks better. Regarding this deal on the Attacks .... I don't think 32mm is deep enough for triathlon. Conventional wisdom, backed up by data guru Dave Warden on Tri-talk, is that a deeper rim is faster, and 32 mm is not really "deep". I'd get at least 46mm Assaults and probably recommend 66mm Strikes, except I can't personally get comfortable with 16X20 spokes that come on the Strikes. And I typically consider 50% of street price as a fair price for excellent-condition used bike gear ... so $550 seems like a "good deal" rather than $750, even with the cassette. I also would not by a used wheel I could not look at first ... but that's just me. Lots of people get great value from used online wheels. The crazy low prices you see on Reynolds 2010 wheels is due to the new 2011 line up, which uses a slightly different cross section, although they are still a pretty narrow cross section, expecially compared to Zipps; and because the new 2011's use a different resin matrix which Reynolds reports runs cooler (lower temperature ) under extreme heavy braking loads. I have not had a problem with heat build up on my 2009's, but this would be a good improvement.
