Subject: Wheels?....how deep????
I'm going to admitt that all the aerodynamics of wheel depths really just makes my head spin and I have no grasp of the concept. I'm going to be putting some wheels on my tt bike and would really appreciate some opinions. I'll try to give you guys all the info needed to help make the decision.

- I'm going to go with Hed Jet C2 series clinchers with a powertap because I can get them through my team, and to keep them simple to swap between my tt and other bikes.

- I weigh in at 170lbs and usually race at 165lbs or under.

- My avg speeds are pretty consistantly over 20mph. I've averaged 21.6 in an Oly and 23.6 in a sprint. I will be focussed on an HIM this year but will also do several sprints and Oly's along the way for training. I have averaged over 20 for 62 miles in training and I've been doing computrainer classes all winter. I expect I'll proabably have, roughly, a 10% improvement on those numbers from last year

-I'm also a mountain biker, and used to road race motorcycles so I'd like to think I'm a pretty good bike handler.

- These wheels will more than likely stay mostly on my tt bike for racing and training, but I'll probably be getting new road bike soon that I will put these on for century rides, possibly some races and some competitive training rides.

Given all this would I see a big benefit going with Jet 9's versus the Jet 6's?

At the very least, get the 9 for the rear!  I would go 9 on both.

I am sure there will be different opinions, but I would most likely go with Jet 60's if you plan to use them on your road bike and for training as well.  I would would also get a wheel cover for the rear wheel for your TT's and Tri's.  I am sure you could get away with 90's, but they might be less versatile.

I have front and rear Jet9. I have been in pretty windy conditions and have yet to have any concerns. I don't think that I would put them on my roadie though. If you want to swap them with your roadie, Jet6 might be the way to go.

I was planning on putting a cover on the the rear reguardless. I'm curious though, why would Jet 9's be good on my tt but not my road bike? and how much would I be giving up on my tt bike going with jet6's vs. 9's?

I'm in the same boat, and will be getting Jet 9's for both. My bike came with 42mm deep rims (Felt TTR2's). I will be using my PT rear Jet 9 on both my road and tri bike, while using the TTR2 front on my road bike. This gives me the option of using the TTR2 front with the Jet 9 rear on my tri bike if the winds are going to be too gusty for the Jet 9 front. I doubt this is going to happen very often though. I'll also be getting a cover for the rear.

The difference between the 6 and 9 is pretty marginal head on, but looks to be significant up to 12.5 deg yaw angle (check out http://www.hedcycling.com/aerodynamics.asp). At 10 deg, it's almost 3x the drag. At 12.5 deg, it looks like the wheel 'stalls out'.

* That's a nice utility that HED has, but I would question the results of other manufacturer's wheels. Hopefully a cover on the Jet 9 will be similar to the Jet disc!

that's the stuff that makes my head spin! LOL

I'm wondering if it would be worth getting the 9's for the tt bike, covering the rear 9, and purchase a 6 front as well. That would give me the option on windy days for tri's and then I could run a 6/9 combo on the roadie. Would that work well?

I won't bore you with the details, but go with a 60 mm deep front and rear. Smile

some of the details actually matter though. Is that recommendation based on me using them on my road bike too? or is this best for my tt bike. Honestly, I'd rather focus on the tt bike and use them on the roadie if I can, but that's secondary. Plus I could do the 6/9. I'd just have to purchase 3 wheels to give me that option

If you are going to use the wheels for road and trial, I would go with a pair of 60mm wheels with a cover for the rear wheel for trial/TT use. If for trial only, then I would either go 60/90 or 90 pair with a cover for the rear.

Question.  Why are you going to buy a deep rimmed rear if you are going to put a disc on it regardless?

so I can swap it to my road bike and possibly let my wife use them on her road bike too. I'll take the cover off for that. Otherwise, I'd be looking at a disc/9 or disc/6 set up. Honestly, I want to focus on what's best for the tt first. If I can use the set up on my road bike, great. If not, that's ok. But I'm willing to buy a third front rim if it makes the set up work on my road bike.

I have had great luck with calling HED to discuss a wheel purchase. They pointed me in the direction of the Jet 6's (which I just recently purchased). I would suggest giving them a call and asking their advise.

Ah I see thanks, sorry to hijack.  Interested in purchasing some wheels myself and am in a similar situation.  Is there a reason disc covers are not also favorable on road bikes? Weight?

You prefer a 60mm front over a deeper, say 80mm front?  I ride mostly pancake flat roads in Tampa Florida so would a 80mm be better for me?  This is too much thinking over a wheel.

I'm sort of guessing here...so don't crucify me if I'm wrong.

I'm pretty sure discs are not allowed in road racing.  So it's not that discs are not good with road bikes...it's simply they aren't allowed in road races...or sanctioned ones at least.

I also remember someone mentioning to me that "some" road races have a depth limit of 60mm for wheels.  That may make sense because you never see companies making 62, 65, or 70mm deep wheels.  They're either 50, 58, or 60mm...then they jump all the way up to 80, 82, or 90+mm.

I will say though...I have seen a road race on tv where someone was rocking a 606 combo (58mm front, 82mm rear).  So if true...it depends race to race I suppose.
