Subject: 2010 Inaugural Florida Ultra Tri (Double Iron) It came, it went. It was an absolutely beautiful weekend with daytime temps reaching 78. Awhile ago, I suggested this course to the race director, Steve Kirby, and so I was a bit nervous about whether the athletes would actually like the course. The overall consensus is that it's a great course. Steve believes a world record can be set in this venue. I'm proud of our little park (Flatwoods) and town; everyone seemed to love it. An excerpt from the blog of one of the competitors, Wayne Kurtz: The bike course road conditions and loop were amazing. The smoothest road I have been on in a long time. The completely flat loop was fast for sure but the added elements of sun/warm temperatures along with wind on the back section of the loop made it challenging. Also, no vehicle traffic on the course made it perfect to hammer the bike with no distractions. In my opinion it is one of the best bike loops on the entire IUTA circuit. Competitors traveled from Liechtenstein, Hungary, France, Sweden and all over the US. One lives only 2 hours away in Ocala. The fastest time was 23:10 and the last competitor finished at 35:50 (might be off on a minute or two). The winner (Marcel Knaust, Liechtenstein) sustained himself solely on Perpetuem, Hammer gels and a Swiss product/beverage, but I saw athletes eating anything from boiled potatoes to barbeque sandwiches. Hope to see some of you on the course in 2012! |
