Subject: Is this enough recovery?

I am registered for the 2011 Marine Corps Marathon (supposed to be my 2nd this year but I just had to withdrawn from the National because of a basketball related knee injury).  I also want to do the Patriot's HIM in Williamsburg.  That would mean HIM Sept 10, Marathon October 30.  Is that enough time to recover from the HIM and be ready for the marathon?

Last year I did an Oly 9/12, Century Ride 10/8, and 10 miler 10/30 and lived to tell about it, but HIM and Marathon is a bigger mountain to climb.

Seems to me that it's plenty of time to recover. A lot depends on how hard you plan on going in both of the races. In terms of training, your long training runs for the marathon should be at or above 13.1 by the time the half rolls around.

I think you're asking the wrong question.  Its not whether you'll have enough time to recover between races but whether you can simaltaneously (and adequately) prepare for both the HIM and the marathon.

My worry would be that the number of miles / amount of time needed for running (and recovering from running) for the marathon would hinder your ability to get in enough volume on the bike.

I would say you have plenty of time to recover.

The more important question is whether you can train for both races at the same time.  You don't have enough time to finish the HIM, and then do a normal marathon training plan.  It would be pretty tough to follow a normal marathon training plan and be running 5-6 times a week, and at the same time also be getting enough time on the bike and in the pool in order to be ready for the HIM.  It is certainly possible, but you would probably be compromising your training for both races

ding ding ding!!!!

I'm in this situation right now. Training for a marathon April 30 and keeping in mind I have an HIM July 17. I've been trying to keep a base enough to jump into the HIM plan later. I'm running 4 days a week and trying to cycle and swim 2-3 times per week. So far it's working, but I'm exhausted. I'm worried I'm not getting enough recovery from long runs. I went from running 8min/miles for 18 miles last week to 10min/miles for almost 20 this week! I'm clearly running out of steam. I think it will come together in taper if I'm careful with the cycling/swimming. I just have to skip a bike/swim when I need to. I think after the marathon a mindful recovery followed by ramping up bike volume will get me where I want to be. But that's me. It all depends how your body recovers

To me it's not about the recovery... it's about... can you get the training in that you need to get in, with the HIM training?

And are you doing too much volume, etc. trying to train for the marathon with the HIM training?

I personally have looked at doing a HIM and mary roughly 6-8 weeks from each other and I found that my long runs were going to be compromised with the HIM training and race.

Was in similar situation.  Thought about doing HIM about 6 weeks after marathon.  I am in week 15 of marathon training and I do not think I would have been able to keep up with the HIM training without compromising one or the other.  Whichever way you slice it one of them will suffer.  I would pick another race if you can. So you can devote what the race needs and you can get your all out if the time you are going to spend training. JMHO
