So, I got my first wetsuit on saturday, but didn't get around to opening it until now, and try it on. It's an xterra Vortex 3. I got it on, and it was tight, as expected, but it fit. So, I was happy, I then looked towards the knees, and saw some slack slightly above the knee. I was 10 seconds from pulling it off, and just pulled it up a little, and slice, my fingernail cut a large gouge in it... Rookie move, i know. I'm soooo bummed...    

It goes all the way through the rubber to that blue harder inner layer. Can I do anything to repair, or prevent it from getting worse??

Arg! What a bummer. Sounds like it's not too bad, though. Get some Aquaseal; that should fit it right up.

Go to your local dive shop and get some wet suit glue.  One of my wet suits is an older one that I have a few cuts repaired this way.

Use just Aquaseal but do not get the Cotol 240 to use with it.  The Aquaseal will take care of things on its own but when mixed with the Cotol (used to speed up the drying) it will leave a white ring around where you put it and it tends to make things harder.  I get better repairs when using just Aquaseal alone.

Sorry it ripped.

I know quite a few folks that have gotten Xterra suits and had them rip first time they put them on.  Some have used wetsuits for years prior.

A trick that helps is soak your wetsuit in the tub before putting it on. Sort of the idea of completely dry suit is like a fully dry sponge and more apt to rip compared to partially damp sponge.

I've used the repair cement from a bike tube patch kit. It seems to work well.

X2.  The first time I wore my wetsuit I kneeled down in shallow water and my knee landed on a rock & punctured my suit.  Got some wetsuit glue and fixed it right up, no problem.

My fingernails are chewed down pretty short and I've still got about a dozen rips in my Xterra.  Doesn't bother me anymore, I just use the Aquaseal and it fixes it up perfectly.
