Tom Demerly. - 2011-03-24 12:46 PM

I review equipment for a living and one reason I'll suggest I am a good reviewer is because I despise complex gadgets.

As a result, the GPS I bought for my personal use is the simple, least expensive Garmin 110.

Tom does write excellent reviews- so I'll agree with his first statement.  And, if the 110 works for him- great.  But for me- I couldn't live with the 110.  I use my 405 for running and cycling.  I have different screens set up for each.  Sometimes I program in custom workouts, sometimes interval training.  I customize the heart rate display with pace and % info, I've used it for skiing- setting it up to display speed and elevation.  I use almost all of what the watch has to offer- and I love every feature.   Frankly, the only thing about the 110 that's nice is the packaging.  Otherwise, you're just buying a crippled GPS unit.

Get the 405 on sale ($170 with HR is a steal).  Unless your hubby sweats a lot or runs in the rain- as the bezel's a bit touchy then.  If so, get the 410 which supposedly fixes the touch bezel issue.  Nothing wrong with the 305- great price but the packaging is not only large... but it's really fugly.

Nike has a new one coming out- that's pretty sharp looking.

I have the 405 and have had it for almost 3 years now.  I don't have an issue with the bezel or battery life.  I've used it on centuries (7+ hours total) and a marathon (4:40ish) with no battery issues.  I chose the 405 over the 305 primarily for looks Cool and, even for a woman, I have ridiculously skinny wrists.  I tried a 305 on at REI and that thing was huge.

But my almost-husband has the 305 and loves it.  So I'm probably no help!  Sorry!

I don't think you'd go wrong buying the 305 for your husband.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond. You all have me leaning pretty heavily toward the 305. I'm thinking that the bezel on the 400 series is going to be bothersome for DH (who is a sweaty runner!) and the lower price means I won't feel bad about upgrading later on if Garmin comes out with something really cool as they are rumoured to be doing.

I know you said he isnt a tri guy, but I have the Timex Global trainer, and I really really like it!  I love the read out! it looks huge, but its actually pretty light, and its completely waterproof.

but the best thing is, its CHEAP!! retail is $360 right now, but on amazon, you can get it for $188 with the heart rate monitor!!
