I did my first longish run this morning since my first 1/2 Mary last weekend and the fitness gains from the race are pretty remarkable. I was running about 11-11:30 min miles before the race on my long runs, (not breaking any land speed records here) but this morning I did a moderate 10k run in 10-10:30min miles and it felt easy and smooth. Just say'n, love the post race fitness bump. Is this always the case?

I noticed that last year. I completed an Oly and had a really difficult race. Smacked in the head on the swim more than once,  cold and windy on the bike and bad pacing for the whole day caught up with me on the run. It hurt, really bad. The next weekend I raced a local 5k, won my age group and had a PR. All of the sudden I realized I could push yourself a lot harder than I thought!

Nice!  Although I'd say the fitness gains were from training for the race, not the race itself.

Yes, definitely lots of slow steady gains from training but I'm talking about a little extra bump in the fitness curve from pushing distance and pace really hard on race day... in training for my 1/2 marathon I never ran more then 10 miles because I started my plan a little late and skipped a week too due to illness, so 13.1 was a push in distance and the pace... it seems to translate back to a bigger then usual gain now, a week later

It may be related to last week's "rest" period.

My training is VERY sporatic (sp?), but I've noticed that if I "get back on the wagon" within a couple weeks, I seem to have made some significant gains - longer breaks, not so much.

Terrific.  For me- the recovery time required from races probably does more damage to my ultimate training and fitness level than just training through.  But- races are a heck of a lot of fun and it's the only time I really test my limits.

It takes me a solid 2 weeks to fully recover from a HM, 6 weeks from a full mary.

I think that's a big part of it.  Until you've really pushed yourself for a long time, you don't realize how much you really have in the tank.
