Subject: Wet suit and timing chip

Sunday will be my first race that I'll be wearing a wet suit for the swim. I was wondering about the timing chip on my ankle and the transition from swimming to biking

Do you put your timing chip below the wet suit around your ankle?

Do you put the timing under (covered by) the wet suit around your ankle?

Does the timing chip make it harder to take off the wet suit?

Do you take off the timing chip to take off your wet suit?

Obviously I don't know what I'm doing.

All help is welcome, except from my brother who will tell me to HTFU! Smile

On my left leg (away from the chainring), snugly, under my wet suit.  WS peels off right over it, no problem.

If your wetsuit is long enough and most will be, just attach the chip and pull your wetsuit leg over it. I put my wetsuit on first than pull the leg up to attach the chip and than fold the leg back over the chip. You shouldn't notice any difference peeling your wetsuit off.

My old wetsuit was long enough to cover the chip, but my current wetsuit ends just above it.  I have to admit I felt more secure during the swim when my chip was covered by the wetsuit.  Now I'm always paranoid it's going to fall off, or get ripped off accidentally by another swimmer, but that hasn't happened yet.  Either way, covered or not covered, no problems taking off the wetsuit in T1 - no need to take off the chip.

I did not think the chip would work through the wetsuit. Now I will be trying it.

I had someone repeatedly grab at my timing chip during a race. I was afraid it was going to come off.

My wetsuit is way above my chip (long legs). You can use a small safety pin to attach the timing trip to itself where the velcro meets for a little insurance.

I am thinking of using my Road ID for this reason, I trust that velcro.

Just be careful not to accidentally pull the chip off with your wetsuit and proceed through the bike and the run without it.  I know from personal experience.

Hey Brad, looking forward to meeting you. Maybe I'll see you at the lake ahead of time. A boat with hundreds of dudes and you think I'd be grabbing a timing chip?  LOL

My timing chip sits below the end of my suit. I have never had it cause an issue. (I have had my fat butt cause an issue...but never the chip ;-))

Would a timing mat read the chip under a wetsuit? Not sure how it is transmitted.

i do a lot of local tris and the straps are always worn out. i got into a habit of using a safety pin to secure it. there is always saftey pins in your grab bag for the bib.

Putting the timing chip belt over your wetsuit leg is bad.... read what I should have done differently during my first OLY!

So yes, left leg, under the wetsuit.

good post!  I did a local tri last year and my strap was really worn out.  I kept feeling it flapping as I swam along.  Finally I stopped, and reached down to check it and it came off in my hand (the velcro just tore off the strap).  had to shove it into the sleeve of my wetsuit to finish.  I now bring safety pins and another strap with me to make sure the darn things are secure!

I have plenty of space on my ankle below wetsuit so I think I will put it there. I'd be worried it woudn't register under my wetsuit, not sure if that would be an issue but this race the timing mat is on a boat, not a gun start so getting that first time is VERY important!

I'm guessing from what I've read here the mat will pick up the chip even if it's under the wet suit.  I'm going with under the wet suit and safety pin for a little extra security. Then I'm going to bust out a fast swim (a fast swim for me)

Yes, they absolutely allow wet suits. There are quite a few triathletes that train there. I think the water temperature is like 68 degrees. There is also a 1/8 mile marker on the side of the pool it's "downhill" to the wall.

You are from Austin?

I always (well, in the 3 tris I've done) safety pin it also. I'm paranoid.  That being said, on my second tri in October the whole thing came off when I peeled off my wetsuit!  Not sure what I did wrong...but I just did my 3rd tri on Sunday and it was fine.
