Subject: Gel Packs....

I tried a Gel pack for the first time on the bike. I now know why they say to try this first during practice. I would have bet money that I was going to vomit. In fact, I was convinced I was going to vomit, it was just a matter of when. Of course, I was doing a brick that day too.. as it turned out, I did not vomit, but I didn't feel better until 8 miles later.

Any suggestions, maybe too much or not enough water afterward taking?

Sounds like you didn't have enough water while you are taking it. I end up taking about 1/4 - 1/3 of the pack, couple big gulps of water, and repeat until it's gone. First time I didn't do that and I thought I was going to choke.

Try drinking a lot more water. If that doesn't work, I would cut back on the amount. I love them now that I've figured out a good method to eat them.

It might have also been the brand.  For example, some people swear by clif shots or Hammer Gel, but both of those brands make me want to puke.

I really like Powerbar Powergel and Cranksports Egel - but others hate them.

Or, it could be flavor.  Keep me AWAY from vanilla or chocolate while working out, bring on the fruit flavors, baby.  Other people - ugh, that apple stuff tastes like crap, give me chocolate any day.

Some people like to water them down too - put them in a gel flask, add some water, shake, so the consistency is thinner - me, I like them straight out of the packet.

I'd suggest trying a few different flavors/brands until you find the one you like the best.  Then, just hope they don't stop making them.

One other thing I thought of: some of the brands add caffeine to some of the flavors. That might make a difference with how you feel after you take them depending on your sensitivity to caffeine. Personally, I prefer the Clif Shot flavors that have caffeine in them (Mocha Mocha, Sonic Strawberry, and Cola Buzz).

What type of gel was it.  I know that Clif Shot and Power Gel make me want to puke due to the consistency.  I love Hammer gel and can tolerate Gu's.

Adios

I really liked the hammer gel raspberry and loved the power gell Tropical fruit and vanilla (although I too thought Vanilla) would be nesty during training. Personally, they all went down really easily.

I have a question for all, do I really need to take them with water if I have no problems swallowing them down

I'm another one who can't stand the chocolate flavor (any brand) and Cliff Shots also make me want to gag. The Gu Vanilla and Banana flavors are OK, as is the Hammer Gel apple cinnamon.

Take them with water so they don't just sit in your stomach. It helps the carbs get into your bloodstream!

I'm a chocoholic who will never again have any chocolate flavored gel. YUCK. I'm new to the game so I went out and bought a bunch of fruity flavors from different brands to compare them. I really like hammer, power and gu gels, all followed by a couple mouthfuls of water. I sometimes have one about a half hour into my workout to keep me going. If it's a long workout I'll bring a couple more for every half hour or so of working out

Not your grocery store.  Try your local bike shop, running shop or maybe sporting goods store.  Sometimes smaller health food type stores will carry them.

But mostly, some type of athletic store is where you want to be.  Buy one each of different flavors/brands you think you might like and give them all a try.  Once you've found one you like, shop for them online and buy them by the case.  It'll be a lot cheaper unless you happen to get them on sale at your local store.
