I am considering using a wetsuit for the May 15th sprint. The main reason is that I am looking for all the help I can get. I am not going to be in the shape I would like to be for the 750m OW swim. Plus, thought it would be fun to try a race with a wetsuit. Not really worried about time as much as not drowning, followed by finishing with enough energy to complete the bike and run.

How many people will be wearing suits and will the suits be sleeved or sleevless?

I am considering having it sent a few weeks early to practice at Wrightsville Beach in the ICW. What do you think?

I wore a sleeveless wetsuit for the HIM on the first weekend last year.  I'm more warm natured than some people and I was ok with a sleeveless- totally comfortable.  But I know a few others were cold and wish they had a full wetsuit, so that all just depends on you.  I think for the most part athletes wear wetsuits if they are allowed- unless you don't have one or are a really good swimmer and don't see the need to wear one.  If the water temps are borderline some athletes don't bother wearing one if they are strong swimmers since they lose some time in T1 having to take it off.

I know that last year the 2nd weekend for the race was not wetsuit legal as the temps warmed up a bit after the first weekend.  I am not sure if your race will  be wetsuit legal or not- you probably won't know until close to the race date.

Definitely do some practice swims in your wetsuit before White Lake.  Make sure to do some OWS swims in it and not wear it in the pool.  Practice coming out of the water and being able to take it off quick/easy.  If it get stucks around your ankles you can apply some body glide there. Make sure to body glide your neck too- most wetsuits rub and will leave horrible chaffing there.  Just getting used to the feeling of wearing one is helpful- at first it will feel tight/constrictve but once you wear it enough you don't really notice that.

I'm not sure if any of this info is helpful, but I'd say that if you can wear a wetsuit for the race I'd go for it!

I'm doing the sprint on May 8th and plan on wearing a sleeveless wetsuit.  In photos from last year that's what most of the people were wearing.  I do know that a full suit is recommended for the most buoyancy.  A good friend plans on wearing his full suit.

And keep in mind that the water temp at White Lake can rise (and fall) quickly (i.e., overnight) because it is so shallow. Last year it was wetsuit legal one day, and not the next because it was hot during that day and warm overnight. There were LOTS of disappointed people the day of the race being told no wetsuits. So just be prepared for anything on race day and you will be fine :-)

If White Lake Half #1 is wetsuit legal, I will be wearing my full suit.

With the way things are looking I'm afraid that White Lake Half #1 is going to be even hotter this year than last....

I will be wearing a full whether it's legal or not for HIM 1...the reason My big race this year will be B2B Full Ironman and I want the practice.

If it is above 82 degrees, I believe they won't let you in the water with one...

Thank you all for the feedback. A little leary about spending some cash on a rental only to find out that I cant wear it on race morning. However, decided that its worth it just to be able to do a couple OW swims before hand. Plus it will be a learning experience for what its like to swim with one.

Bad idea. It the water is over the legal temperature you'll be overheated in your full wetsuit. Not a good start for a long and which might be a very warm day.
Go practice somewhere else, you have ages before the full B2B.

Water temp was 68 degrees this morning.  It went up 3 degrees in 1 week.  With 3 weeks before the race, this is going to be close..........

Well the water was only 69 degrees this morning so unless we get a real heat wave I think wetsuits will be legal.  At least for the first weekend.  Check back next Saturday and see what the water temperature is then.

Hoping the forecast for Wednesday May 4th (high 67/low 45) holds true.  That may be just enough for the races next weekend to be wetsuit legal.
