Subject: Hangin' with the Roadies

So tomorrow (Saturday) I'm doing a USCF race! A 4K prologue TT in the morning, followed by a crit in the afternoon. The TT should be simple...short and really fast. A couple of short, steep hills on the course, and four corners.I'm no sprinter, so I don't really have the legs fo something as short and intense as this, but it should be fun none the less.

The crit is another story. Thirty minutes plus 3 laps of a 1K course, four turns and a chicane thrown in for fun. I'm facing Cat. V, which means attacks from the get go. My plan is to hang in and not go nuts, while (hopefully) all of the other knuckleheads blow themselves out reacting to the attacks. And then the second that the pace slows...go!

My goals are: MOP for the TT, averaging >25mph. Don't get dropped in the crit, don't crash out, don'tembarrass my tri-geek self.

Race reports tomorrow!

Go out there and give them hell. I did my first crit in July and man it was wild. They really go out hard and try to drop the group fast and seemed to slow down in the middle, rebuilding for the end. I crashed on the next to last lap as 3 people went down in front of me and the only way to avoid them was to go into a curb. Got up and finished but it knocked me out of the top 3 fo the omnium. Go make us tri geeks proud and I look forward to the race report.

As my team captain, I demand you go out and put you wheel up the a$$ of anyone who tries to get you down. Good luck tomorrow!

Hey run,

I have done 2 of the GA cup races this year and the crit speeds are insane. In Savannah the avg speed for the first 3 laps was 28.5mph by my computer. Good luck. You should win or place in the TT

Cat 5 crit means they will go out really hard, then slow WAY down after the first few miles, then attack like hell, the slow WAY down again, etc, etc. Sometimes the faster category races are easier because they actually keep a more consistent pace.

I have my hopes on eventually doing some crit and TT racing when I've improved my group riding and cornering skills, so I can't wait to read your RR.

Give 'em hell

Jim your goals sound good. I'll be looking for the race report on Monday. From my experience, what Jambo and Ken are telling you about the crit speeds/intensity is correct. Go give er.

that's how it is out here. Its interval work more then a race

I've never seen a sucessful break in a CAT 5. everyone will react to anything. Try resting on the back of the front group, throw yourself wide and jump for 30 seconds. 1/2 the field will be fighting for your wheel, teammates elbowing eachother out instead of covering the move, etc.

But its a blast!!!!

The pace will be incredibly fast the first few laps of the cri, so get in your pedals FAST and hang on for dear life. The pce will settle, but in crits the good riders want to burn off less experienced riders right away so they can't cause a crash. Hang in there and have fun. Ken
