Subject: I want a tiny cell phone, not a gigantic smart phone

Okay people of COJ who have forgotten more about technology than I'll ever know.

Executive summary: I want the cell phone equivalent of what apple did to the ipod nano (cut the size in half and improved the functionality -- I love my Nano), preferably on verizon.  Verizon store/website seems to have NOTHING of the sort.  Please help.

Long story:

My current verizon phone (samsung somethin or other... like a razr but smaller) is getting achient (well past my 2 year new phone period) and the battery life is starting to stink and the screen goes black in the cold.

I want a new phone, and I was all excited to see how technology had advanced in the last 4ish years and I was going to have a cell phone that had all that fancy phone technology (like being able to make phone calls) but was now so tiny I could barely see it.

I have a blackberry for work, but cannot use it as my full time cell phone.  I have zero desire to lug around another smart phone... I'm already short on pocket space on days I don't wear a suit.  I do not need internet, fancy keypads, 10MP cameras, data plans, games, etc.  I want to be able to to talk on the phone, and send/receive about 10 texts a month.  If I can take a crappy photo in a pinch that's a bonus, but certainly not a requirement.

Verizon has NOTHING for me, but I'm hoping someone here is going to tell me "oh just order this phone (link) and then type in this magical code and swap your SIM card and it will work fine" or something like that.  I'd also consider switching companies (I currently pay about $40 a month for my plan) for a tiny phone and a comparable plan.

No idea if this works with your carrier (I have Sprint), but I have an LG that's small. Standard clamshell design, is about 2" square. I carry it in my front pocket all the time. Has a full keyboard, but it's pretty small. It's a couple years old though.

The only thing I lament about going to a new smart phone is the size... I like the smaller phone!

On the Verizon site, I looked at "feature phones" and found the ones that you're looking for.  In the store, they will try to steer you to the more expensive smart phones.

Go to Amazon.com - search for "Verizon Cell Phones"

Cull through until you find what you like. Purchase. Take to Verizon. Have it activated. Problem solved.

Some on Amazon include activation, so you may come out cheaper that route.

Sadly, there's not a way to seperate the "non smartphone" options out.

I am SO totally with the OP on this topic.  I hate, hate, hate the size of all those fancy smartphones.  I don't want to lug around a huge, heavy phone...especially when I'm out riding my bike.  I want something light, small, and functional.  Right now I'm using a Nokia 6350 flip phone...it's okay, but I've had it for 2 years and it's nearing it's end of life.  I think it's the only flip phone that AT&T still offers with a contract.   I don't want or need a data package, internet, or any of that multi-media stuff.  Heck I don't even really need texting.  A camera would be okay, but that's about it.  I don't want to pay $70 a month for a data/talk/text package.  My current plan is $69 for 3 phones (me, my husband, my in-laws) and that's a voice only plan, no text, no data.   All 3 of us have flip phones...my in-laws have NO desire for anything more complicated than a flip phone...they have enough trouble operating that one!   Anyways...I'm no help, since I can't find what I'm looking for either.  My contract isn't up until Sept., so I'm stuck with this POS until then, because I refuse to give AT&T $200 to get out of my contract.   And I'm guessing that by September, my options for a small, simple phone will be even less.

That is what I have, it may not be the smallest, but it's small, has some cool features (temp, pedometer, compass, led light, tides, etc...) It is not the cheapest also, but is water resistant and shock resistant. I'm happy with it.

I have exactly what you are looking for. Just walked into a Verizon store and told them that I just wanted a phone to call on and they steered me towards their basic model. It is possible and they have them. I think it is an LG but I'm not sure.

I'm a WebOS fanboy so I'm going to point out that HP is releasing a small smartphone soon.  It's called the HP Veer.  Here are its dimensions from the website, WxHxT - 2.15" x 3.31" x 0.59"

Just my 2 cents.

Have you tried the store yet? They may have one or two phones there.

I like! But I'd have to try it in my hands to see if it would actually work for me... The keyboard on my LG is kinda small.

I didn't see in your OP if you are interested in texting or anything else. a girlfriend of mine has a tiny cell, it's great for calls but there is literally no screen to see things on, so if I"m running late and I send a text it's either so small to read.   Pretty sure she is on verizon,, I'll check.

but there are a lot of smaller phones out there, just buy one online and have the store activate it

Thanks for the suggestions.  What bugs me out is that my almost 4 year old phone is really more compact than all of the no frills basic flip phones at the store today.  I like the SNL and Zoolander phones, but sounds like that's not gonna happen.
