Subject: Going #1, not able to go #2
During my last three long rides on the weekends I have been having to stop and pee quite frequently, about every 30 minutes. I am not overhydrating the day before and I am just having a single bottle before I ride in the morning. Any sugguestions/thoughts? I have had this problem in the past during long marathon training days, but have never had an issue on race day (though I am one of the folks running back and forth to the port o john from nervous energy).

Another item, after long workouts (over 2.5 hours) I am unable to have a BM for the rest of the day. Causing me to wake up feeling really bloated for my Sunday morning long run.

Example, 3 hr ride and transition run on Saturday morning, fish tacos for lunch and pizza for dinner with a couple beers. No BM. Sunday morning small BM, then 90 min run, had to stop and pee 4 times in the first 45 minutes, finally had to make a BM break with 30 minutes to go in my run and after that no issues with pee or #2 after that.

Probably TMI, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are drinking an entire bottle of hydration right before your ride you're over doing it.  Your body can't absorb that much in a small amount of time.  IIRC you can absorb about 4-6 oz every 20 minutes.  Instead of drinking an entire bottle before you ride, why not take the bottle on the ride and consistently sip water during the entire ride....ideally about 4-6 oz per 20 min?

Hmmm.

Well, we're all friends here.

I'm not a medical doctor (pretty obviously) but I do have a G.I. system, one that has been subjected to every manner of adversity on all seven continents, with every attendent malady.

Firstly, the peeing.

If you are a lad then this is the perfect time to learn to pee off the bike while moving. You think the top cycling athletes always stop to pee? Sometimes they can, other times it's pedal to the metal and too bad for who's on your wheel... (yuck). So, learn to pee on a descent, over the top of your shorts. If you're a lass, well, I'm not much help to you. My understanding is you're peeing your pants then.

Now, as for the other.... issue. Not good.

My reaction is hydration, or rather, dehydration. Now, I know that doesn't jive with the other matter of frequent urination, but it could. You may also have a bit of a blockage in there. That comes with dehydration also. You can get a colonic- basically, they rinse you out from the south end while you're pointed north, and you instantly feel better. The key is, you have to find out why that happened and prevent it.

Take a look at your eating habits. Refined foods and a lack of "roughage" can contribute to this. Nutritional products can too, like liquid calorie sources we use during long rides- they form a nasty "paste" inside your colon. Yuck again. Gotta get that stuff outta there.

A golden BB, if there is one, is called Citrucel. It is a fiber supplement. You dissolve it in 8 oz. of water and drink it. Pretty soon, you pooh. when you drink Citrucel fiber supplement regularly (twice a day) then you are regular (twice a day). You can set your clock by it. Remarkable. Especially helpful before big races.

I was once in a rather unsavory position in a Middle Eastern country where I was... compelled to drink some quite fetid tea. My hosts were insistent, and I was not in a position to decline their... hospitality. It wasn't long before I was back in the U.S. in a hospital. I'm relatively certain a terrorist organization infiltrated my colon. I was sick for two years. Ultimately several hearty courses of anti-biotics killed it (and my teeth) and regular doses of Citrucel ever since have returned me to some level of normalcy.

Eat enough roughage, fruit, vegetables, drink enough water, don't eat too much meat and take Citrucel. If all else fails, you may have to get more... interventional.

Best of luck with that.... Been there. Surprised

@Tom- Thanks for the advice, I will look into the dehydration piece of it actually causing a problem.  My diet is on point, Saturday was just a splurge day after a hard ride with my coach.

@Zed- I really appreciate your comments.  I suppose that two grilled tuna tacos with fresh guacamole are suddenly unhealthy after a three hour ride.  And it is likely that two slices of mega veggie pizza and a couple beers are just the worst things in the world.  Just because I mentioned tacos, pizza, and beer you assumed I was cramming down double stuffed crispy chalupas, might meaty pizza and going through a case of four loko?  I was looking for some legit advice on an issue that I would like to have resolved prior to my race.  Thanks again.

Don't be offended.  Just search for hot tamales in the forum history and you will get it.  Don't read at your desk at work.

Just musing... do you have any other physical stress-related urination problems?  You mentioned running in the past and biking now.  Maybe when lifting weights?  It's possible a urologist could help you if it were stress-induced overactive bladder.

For #2:  Try and poop BEFORE your long workouts.  I can't step out the door for a workout unless I "go" before hand.
