Subject: Is this a hard climb? Chattanooga Waterfront

Hey Guys - looking to do the Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon in July.  I saw this climb posted:

http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/7407193

I live in a relatively flat area and probably won't get to practice hills very much, and definitely not for that long.  Is this a hard course?  Any advice on training for this?

Similarly, what about the run?

The tri and runs I have done don't have hills in them really!  Like FL, its pretty flat here.

Thanks!

I can't answer your question but I live in Knoxville about an hour away. Very hilly in this area and Chattanooga. Post your question in the Tennesse forum and you may find someone who knows the course better.

I don't think it is all that bad. One climb gains 200 ft in a little over 1 mile that and the long climb gets a little over 200 feet in like 6 miles. Florida may not have hills but you do have wind? Use the sustained head winds as a form of hill training..looks like a fun downhill finish.

I did the race last year.  It is hilly but the hills are rolling, not really very steep.  The roads are great, and despite being a little hilly and slightly longer than a normal Oly ride, I would rate the bike course as fast.

The run is mostly flat, along the river and very pretty, though you do have to run up some stairs (!) at one point.

All in all I thought it was a fantastic race.

Nothing too steep but a few long uphills.  Race is put on by "Team Magic" and was well done last year.  There may be an elevation map on their website.

Sorry, should have paid more attention to your original post as you had linked the maps. .  Since I already mentioned the bike course I will try to provide more detail about the run course.  Gradual uphill out of transition along the road. You go up a flight of about 15-20 steps and then have a pretty good downhill for maybe 200 yards. You then follow along the Riverwalk to turnaround and then come back.  Of course then you have what at that point is a pretty tough uphill before going back down the steps and then a good downhill to the finish.  Great venue. Time trial start on the swim with usually a little current helping you out.

Sign up and do it! It is one of the best organized events you will ever do. Chattanooga Track Club assists with the event and they always do an excellent job. Tons of volunteers and a fantastic course. You will enjoy it!

Check out some of last years race reports too.  Some people describe the course fairly well.  The good part about the bike, although it does have some longer grades than your traditional rollers (meaning you actually have to shift and settle into it and not just power over), is that the downhills are fairly long as well.  Do you need a climbing cassette? I did it with a 12x21 so there was nothing that will make you feel like you have to walk up it.   The majority of the course is in the fast lane of a divided 2 lane highway with cones blocking the traffic in the slow lane to your right.  SO that means for a fairly decent road surface and no cars passing on your left (safe course in my opinion).

The run, well its a good layout as an out and back. Miles 2-5 are dead flat along the river.  Nothing brutal.  The stairs and a short hill are there as described by others but you can walk those if need be in < 2minutes.

Fun race, sign-up, you'll love the downriver swim and overall atmosphere.  Plus 2 free beers at the finish from the local brew pub, what's better than that?
