I tried a couple times last year when trying to ramp up for a Marathon. For me it did not help - it didn't seem to keep me any fresher, my legs were just as dead after 17-18 as without the breaks.

So now I just run. Perhaps more slowly than I'd like Wink

No. I pretty much only run distances that I can do without walking.

Yes, and I have used it to build up to the distances I can do with out walkling.

No, not like Galloway, but on long training runs, I will allow myself to walk a little if I need to, especially to drink or eat a gel.  But nothing planned or done regularly.

Yes.  Any run over an hour is a 4 run 1 walk

Nope.  slowing down a little normally gets my HR under control on the long ones if I'm going too fast

YES on all training runs (9 run/ 1 walk) longer than 1,5 hours and in all races longer than olympic distance.

I think this is another thing that is going to be one of those "what ever is best for you" things.  If i'm on a run and its just not my day. Feeling slow and tight. I will take a break and maybe even stop and stretch.

I do think it is more beneficial to get good quality mileage in rather than dying for an entire run.  Your body will tell you what to do. Listen to it.  If you feel like you absolutely need to take a walk break then do it.  But dont just do it because you are feeling lazy.  Enjoy your run

I do not usually and I have not used it in my marathons, but as I start my IM build this year, I will start doing it.  At IM Louisville last year, my friends who used a run/walk plan were far more successful than I was and finished feeling better.  The run/walk (even just walking the aid stations) helps lower your HR and body temp and enables you to run a faster overall pace than you would otherwise.

The www.imtalk.me podcast has a great interview with Mike McGee about the run/walk strategy that you might want to check out.

That said, I don't think that a run/walk strategy is a substitute for putting in the appropriate amount of training.  You still have to put in the same amount of miles, regardless of whether running or doing the run/walk.

I've done it when recovering from an injury at the suggestion of my physical therapist. I "ran" the NYC tri last year using a 6:00/1:00
run/walk because I was still rehabbing. I wouldn't use it as a consistent strategy, though.

I've been doing tris since '04. I used to think walking was failure in runs in tris. In '07 I tried run/walk and found I was faster which is the goal. For my last two IMs I trained r/w and figured out what ratio worked best for me. Depending on how I'm feeling I will r/w on runs or just long runs. With a knee injury and surgery r/w helped me get back to running and train for IM.

I've read a lot about run/walk and for most triathletes in longer distances run/walk probably will be faster than trying to just run but more helpful for slower athletes. I really like this article.

Legitimate strategy that many non-elites employ with decent success. Many sub-3hr marys have been RW'ed.  Galloway is prob best known proponent (www.jeffgalloway.com), but some other well-known coaches also teach run/walk at least in some cases (e.g. McGee, Higdon).  Not saying it's best for all, but many RW without admitting it (e.g. planned walks @ each water station is essentially 6-10:1 RW). Keep in mind that walking breaks can be at a good clip with only little time loss.  American open record for walking 20k (just under HM) is 1:22 (roughly 6:32/mi pace), and 1:34 (7:28/mi pace) for 50yr old man.

http://www.usatf.org/statistics/records/view.asp?division=american&location=road&age=open&sport=RW

http://www.usatf.org/statistics/records/byEvent.asp?division=american&location=road&age=masters&distance=20&distanceUnits=km&distanceType=race%20walk

I used 4:1 RW plan to survive my woefully undertrained 1st mary (>5hrs).  Agree 10000% that RW is no substitute for proper training.  As I've logged many more miles I've experimented with RW at various distances.  I am definitely faster running 5k & 10k (23 & 49min PB's), and roughly similar run vs RW for HM (PB 2:03).  Last Fall's mary (still badly undertrained) was all run (except walked some water stations) & I finished 4:51.  I may try aggressive RW on my next full, though result would be unfair comparo as my training mileage is way up. My HM in 2 wks will prob be forced RW in early miles due to crowds (late Corral assignment @ 500 Mini with 35k runners).

When I started, I worked my way up to 3.1 miles running by including walk breaks.  As soon as I could run 3.1 straight without walking, I haven't taken an intentional walk break since.  Occasionally on a long run I might stop for a second to get a drink or eat something, or double over in pain, but no planned "walk breaks" anymore.

I can't speak for long runs, but for me where I'm at currently I think the run/walk is a pretty good strategy and I got some evidence supporting it yesterday.

I have been starting to run more lately, and I set a goal of trying to run an entire 5k loop by my birthday, which was 4/23.  I got my wife and kids to go out ahead of me with water and I finally pulled it off.

I PRd the run for about the 5th time in a few weeks, but this time only by 7 seconds.  7 whole seconds with everything hurting and me almost not being able to stand up when I finished vs. way more relaxed when taking short walking breaks.  The effort & fatigue VS. speed ratio was so much higher with the sustained jogging.

My average is right at 11:00/mile now, and when running (between breaks) I am probably a little under 10.  I imagine the payoff from walk breaks shrinks greatly as overall speed improves.  IE, for someone running sub 20 5ks, walking probably couldn't possibly help their times.

I'd say walking some is helpful, and probably more so for longer distances and/or slower over-all paces.

No. I use run/walk if I am returning from a lengthy injury hiatus. I don't believe in run/walk as a permanent training method.

That aside, I don't care what you do.

Isn't your best time the goal?  Galloway maintains it improves overall time.
