Subject: Rookie Mistake?

I purchased new KSwiss Kwiky's that arived last week and I have gone out for a few runs in them since they arrived but nothing longer than an hour. Well, last night in my infinite wisdom, I decided to lace them up for my long run (scheduled for 3 hours). All was good until about mile 10 and then my feet started bothering me just below my ankle on the left and I started feeling shin splints on the right. I hobbled through almost 15 miles by the time I made it back to the house.

My intent was to get used to running in these new shoes ( I was running in Mizunos up until now) so that I could use them at IMTX. Now, I am thinking they are staying in the closet and I will run in my Mizunos on race day. I thought I was giving myself enought time to break these in, and maybe I just went too long too soon in them. But, with only 1 week of training left before my taper, I dont want to risk having this happen again next week.

Lesson learned ... dont change shoe brands this close to your race!!!! I should have made this switch a few months ago if I was going to do it ... 30 days out from my A race wasnt such a smart idea, hence, the rookie mistake subject line!

Ouch... Sorry to hear that... Glad you're putting them in the closet though. Any idea why they are causing pain?

Sounds like you were trying to do it the right way.  You still have time to get it straightened out.

I've been there - it's not very fun.  I needed a new pair of shoes 4 weeks before a marathon and tried to get the same kind, only to find they'd been replaced by a new model.  I figured that wouldn't be a big deal but they fit completely differently.  I ended up going to the local running store and getting re-fit.  Found a different brand that worked out well, but I still used my old ones during the race itself.

Good luck in TX!

I'm doing IMWI and I already have my shoes in line for that race, and it's 5 months away. It's one thing to try a new pair of shoes for a sprint. It's another thing entirely to do it for an IM.

If you really need a new pair of shoes, I'd get another pair of the Mizunos. You've trained this long in them... why the sudden switch?

I think its just the change in cushioning compared to my mizunos .. the arch support feels pretty good. And since it took about 10 miles before they really started to bother me it leads me to believe it has to be just a little less support than my feet are used to. No blister issues or hot spots, just the discomfort in the foot and the slight feeling of a shin splint. I have ahd shin splints before I went to the Mizunos, but not since I started using them, so getting that feeling again really made me not want to push it

I was looking for a lighter racing shoe that would also drain water better than my Mizunos do .. during hot races my shoes tend to get water logged and I get that sloshing in my shoe. I was hoping these would alleviate some of that.

I am definitely back to the Mizunos until after race day, then I might try and get used to these again and see if they will work long term or not

Look at it this way, you learned they don't work 23 days before your IM instead of at mile 10 of the run

I'm like Laura, get my race shoes months before the race, put them aside and run 3-4 times in them so they are almost new..but they are same type of shoes I've been wearing all year.

for what it is worth, I did the exact same thing.  My saucony guide 3 shoes are soooo heavy after water logging during a half - so I bought the Konas by kswis.  I felt a difference in feel.  However, all felt good on 5-6 mile runs and I added the kona runs slowly.  however, I ended up with pain in areas that I had not had before.  Went back to the guide 3 and all resolved.  Have tried the konas a few times since and same issue.  I now have speed laces on them to use for sprints.  I think some of us are made to run in cushion shoes or else we need to spend more time barefoot to strengthen some of our connective tissue.  my .02.
