Subject: Ques for Dr's/Med Pros-blood in urine

The last few days I have seen a little blood in my urine. I went to the doctor this morning and my urine tested positive for blood. All the other things the test was for came back negative- no infection, protein, all normal. The doctor sent the sample out for analysis and I am waiting for the resuts on Monday.

I guess I am looking for some reassurance as to what could be the cause of this and the likelyhood of cancer.

Thanks,

T2

In my experience, the most likely cause of blood in your urine is a kidney stone. Number one cause of that is chronic dehydration.

Disclaimer: keep seeing your DR!

x2...also prostatic issue possible especially if enlarged, bleeds a little...also mechanical trauma bike etc

in some instances with endurance athletes if the bladder is empty the bladder wall can rub against the other side.

I am in medical field but not a urologist.......but got the info above from my urologist when I thought I had similar issue.

I had similar thing happen after I did two sprint tris within 4-5 days. My urine was brown looking.

Saw the doctor, tested positive in urine and had a bunch of blood tests, no real answer. There was thought I might have rhabdomyolysis or something with my kidneys.  My doctor had me come in for more blood tests the day after my next race to see if blood work and urine showed anything but it didn't.

It's never happened again.

Glad you have seen your physician and hope he can figure out what's going on.

Grumble grumble.

I had blood once and went to see the doc.  He put me on antibiotics for an infection and had me get an ultrasound AND an MRI "just to be safe."

Blood cleared up the next day.  Antibiotics cost like $10, tests were $500.  I ever get in a position like that again I am refusing the tests until after I've started the drugs.  I had to PAY so that HE could cover HIS rear....

Cancers are nasty, but I don't think they follow a formula that on day x you are curable, but on day x+1 it is terminal.

With all the pressure bikers put on their plumbing I wouldn't get too paranoid about blood, but don't get me wrong, I'd still have it checked out!

Did they think you were possibly pretty  dehydrated?  After a long strenuous workout in hot weather and you are pretty severly dehydrated your urine can look brown than after finishing and you rehydrate it clears almost immediatey or soon thereafter on your next #1...or the other condition posted

cancers commonly present with gross hematuria - was the toilet red when you peed?  Do you have melena?  I'm guessing it will be benign and if you have any pain most likely a stone.  stick with the doc though

It was the following day after second sprint...don't think it was dehydration as they were only sprints 90' max.

I don't want to give medical advice on a Tri forum but I can clear up a few issues. Brown urine after intense training can be the result of rhabdomylitis and porphyrins in the urine. This will show as a positive test on dip stick. A positive dip stick should be followed by a microscopic evaluation of the urine. If a microscopic evaluation shows red blood cells, more work-up is indicated. Most likely it is not a cancer but this needs to be ruled out. In most early cancers of the urinary tract, the only sign is microscopic hematuria (blood in urine).

I'm not sure if this helps, but make sure you follow-up completely
