Hi everyone, I'm a newbie tri-wannabee and hoping to do Beach to Battle Half this year.. Im from Scotland and been living here a couple of years in the Raleigh area and looking to do some Open Water swims to get practice at orientation and sighting techniques.. does anyone know which Lakes can accomodate, are safe from boats and health points, and also if possible, can anyone tell me any places where you can measure how far it is the swim??..

Many many thanks in advance,

Donwah

There are groups that swim in both Jordan an Falls Lakes. The Falls Lake group meets fridays @ 6:00 AM and Wed. @ 6 PM. The Jordan Lake swims are now done from Ebenezer Beach. The regulars can tell you the distances.Where we used to swim in Jordan Lake we had a 400 yds. section, so out and back was 800 yds.

Here is Ebeneezer at Jordan Lake: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/map.asp?routeid=156610

Obviously it is not very precise measuring based on satelite images without a clear view of landmarks, but it's roughly 300 yards for one lap.

Edit: Doug, where do they meet at Falls Lake?

Mark:

It is off 98. If you are heading west from Wake Forest. It will be on the left a little ways past the recycling station. There is gravel there and it is just before one of the bridges.

I'm a big fan of Ebenezer Beach, it's nice to have actual parking and bathrooms there.  Plus it has bouys out there which helps practice sighting.  You have to pay on the weekend and maybe during the week come summer but I think it's only about $40 for a summer pass (or $6 per visit) and well worth it if you plan to go regularly.  It's also a great starting point for bike rides so you could do a nice brick workout.

I swam at the cove at Falls on Sunday...very intimate spot and free from boat traffic. Here's the location and the side I swam from:

Also for the Ebenezer Beach area, you can choose to swim the outuer no-wake buoys which increases your distance:

You can find the current temps here:

Both Current Lake temperatures, degrees Fahrenheit= 71

The lakes will surely warm up some more to a pleasant temp.

So assuming wetsuit legal races are 78* and below, I guess whether you choose to swim with or without is up to you and what your body can handle. We do have races that are not wetsuit legal, mostly starting in a week or so...

Annual pass is $50 and the good news is, it's good for both lakes. Assuming the email I got was correct.

The annual pass works for both Falls Lake and Jordan Lake.

That's where I hang out on the boat in the summer too.  Good thing, no matter how early, there are very few fishermen in that area, but later in the day, there can be some boat traffic as that cove is fairly sheltered from the wind and makes a great riding cove.

Beaverdam is nice too.  No gas powered boats allowed at all.
