Hi guys,

at what point do you start thinking that you want to start the OWS season ?

currently, we have around 40 deg around in the water...

What your treshold with a wetsuit ON ? 50 ? 60 ??

I have been wondering the same thing.  Sylvan Lake here in Waterford, MI is currently at 54.

We usually are out wakeboarding in water down to about 60 with wetsuits, but we're only in the water a short period of time...

I am possibly the world's biggest cold-water weenie, but I'd do low 50s with a wetsuit. And double-cap and earplugs.

I do the same thing( wetsuit, cap, earplugs), but don't do OWS below mid - high 50s. So you are not the "world's biggest cold-water weenie", maybe I am

We typically start when the water temp is up to the 50-55 range.

54 Really?  I can't remember the last time the ambient temp was above 54 here in Waterford. lol.

My first OWS of the season will be tomorrow at IslandLake.   I suspect that temps will be in the low 50s.  Full wet suit.

Well ... i tossed a thermometer off the end of the dock today at lunchtime so I can't speak to official accuracy. i'm itching to get in the water with the full suit I got yesterday. It would be my first OWS ever.

I went out in 47 degree water temp today. Full wetsuit. It was too cold! I lasted about 5 minutes. I'll try again next week.

I did both 46 and 47 a couple of months ago in a full suit and neoprene cap.  It was f-ing cold!  Definitely made my other OWS easier, though.

Ahm, I don't think so,,,,,, I believe that title is mine.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the cold,,,,, unless it gets below 80.

I did a tri a couple of weeks ago and I think the water was 58, after about 10 seconds I seriously thought about quitting, but convinced myself that I would warm up a little as I went along.

Funny…I just got my Wet Suit yesterday too (Xterra) and today will be my first ever OWS.  I basically learned how to swim 4 months ago. This will be interesting.  Trial by fire ... cold water.  I'll let everyone know how it goes.

16days 23hrs till my first Tri.

Well... I decided to take the plunge during lunch today and test out my new Xterra full suit for my first OWS.  The wet suit was very comfortable, more buoyant than I expected, and much to my surprise I stayed mostly dry until I was almost done.  I only swam about 200 meters due to time constraints, as the main goal was to test the temps with the suit.

That said, mid-50's is fine for me and I will start doing 1-2 OWS per week from here on out.

I will probably have to go back out tonight for more distance.

^^ This.  Water below 80 is awful.  Below 70 and I won't warm up to it no matter how long I'm in it.  For many of the temps mentioned above, if I jumped in the water before the race to get used to it, I'd probably get back out and go home so that I didn't have to get in.  My only hope would be to just get in once and get far enough away from shore that I was better off just finishing the swim.
