I didn't get a chance, but was planning on trying it.  Are the water temps still too cold ?

Seems too cold to me.  I have no plans on even trying it until Memorial Day at the cabin.  No rush here as my first MN race is Mtka on June 18.  Plus, I know I have no issues with OWS.

after i froze in 47 degree water last wednesday, I am going to wait until this coming weekend.  I hope water temp warms up at least 5 degrees in that time.

I'm hoping the water temps come up in some of the smaller lakes up here soon, I'd like to get out at least 3-4 times before Buffalo on 6/5.

Anyone doing OWS this weekend? Where? I need to swim with new wet suit. The indoor pool is too hot. I wonder if they let you swim at Lake Calhoun now?

The lake beaches usually "open" on Memorial Day weekend.  I would be wary of trying to swim in a high profile like, like Calhoun, where they've been known to ticket swimmers for various reasons.

That said, I might still try it just for a quick dip.  If a cop showed up I would play dumb and say I will leave.

Not that I will be swimming this early.  That's just crazy!!!!!

I just did my first ows this evening. Water was not that bad, I don't know the temp. I do know that I need more work. I had a hard time exhaling under water. Not sure if it was the cold or just being on the open water.  A couple more weeks and the water will be nice for swimming.

What lake?

I find the cold makes breathing much harder.  Warmer water plus experience and you'll get over it quickly.

I went to twin lakes off of NowThen blvd. It is a small lake with a nice beach and very clean clear water, with little boat traffic.

Thanks for letting me know it is not just me with the breathing aspect. I will be adding more lake swims to my training plans as I continue to improve and gain experience.

The official open water swimming season in Alex is open, says me.  I got out for a swim this afternoon in L'Homme Dieu.  Wow, was it cold!  At least for the first 5-10 minutes while my wetsuit slowly leaked water into it and I started warming up.  I wonder how many people drove past the beach (highly visible from the hwy) and wondered, "What a fricken nutjob!"

Now that I got that out of the way, I'll be heading out again on Thursday.  I'm not sure what the water temps were, but they couldn't have been too far into the 50's since we've only had about 6 days this spring with air temps above that!  And it's a really big lake (1800 acres and up to 85 ft deep) so it probably takes a bit longer to warm up.
