OK, I heard back from Trek today, and they are giving me a choice of which bike I want (this is for the bike I won in May).

My choices are a 2006 Trek 1500 or a 2005 Trek Equinox 7.  I told them I would let them know by the end of the day.

IMHO, the only thing making this a difficult choice is that picking the tri bike would still leave you without a road bike that fits (right?). If you are OK with the too-small road bike, OR if all of the cycling you plan on doing is triathlon related, then the tri bike is still an easy choice.

Probably the only reason I would choose the 1500 would be if I planned on doing centuries and group rides where the tri bike wouldn't be appropriate, and was not comfortable on the road bike that you own.

Brandt,

What did you decide about your 1/2 IM by the way?

Bear gives the best advice here -- depends on what you will be using them for. Take the Equinox and give it to your BIL if he can beat you at the 1/2 in October. If he can't beat you, reserve the right to kick him square in the butt whenever you see him.

John,

My road bike is not uncomfortable in a bad way...but I certainly want one that fits.  I have ridden it in several group rides without too much trouble.  I think I'll take the equinox, ebay my road bike, and save up for a mid-level road bike in the right size.

Yo, I'm sure JDOG22 would tell you "take the Equinox, man".  He and the homies used to ride 'em 30 blocks through the hood before bustin' a quick 3 mile run.

Peace out.

Sounds like a plan to me. Enjoy. Guess you'll be a pacesetter on that bike course at River Cities next year!

Brandt,
I think taking the Equinox is a good plan of action. Good deals on road bikes are a little easier to find.

I would go with the Equinox 7 as well, because it is a gift that you won. Go with something a little more impratical. Sell your road bike on Ebay for more than it is really worth to someone looking to buy their first road bike and only have a dollar amount in mind and not a specific bike. Use that money to save for a road bike with Ultegra components and a nice frame.

My only question is:
Will the Equinox be too big for you since you were sized for a Trek Road Bike?

Well, that is an interesting question, Michael.  Maybe stupidly, I assumed that I would need the same size frame for a tri bike...and ther eis no one within 300 miles that can fit me for a tri bike at this point.

That is probably a safe assumption, but I have no experience with Tri Bikes to give you an answer.

Even if it doesn't work, you can get $1000+ for it off of Ebay.

Decision is made, for better or worse!  A 2005 Trek Equinox 7 will be in my possession in the very near future....now I just have to sell my road bike so I can get one of those in the right size as well.

Why don't you go ahead and ship it to me and I will keep it for you until River Cities next year?

It will save you some money on shipping it later. I will even assemble it and keep it nice and clean while I break it in for you.

You know, I live here in WI and I could go up to the Trek factory and pick it up for you and hold on to it until you can come and pick it up (to save you shipping costs of course....)
Just thinking about you man......

And, you know, I don't live too far from Wisconsin... I could test ride it for you... You know, just to make sure MarkK's assessment of the gearing, frame, whatever, is correct... you know? Again, just thinking about you... Willing to make the sacrifice for you.
