Is there anything I need to know about the course? This will be my second tri, last year I did the granite man. This will be my first on pavement and on my bike and I'm really looking forward to it. I'll be bringing up the rear so save me a beer.

I'll be there.  It'll be my first OLY.

I have a friend who keeps warning me that the water is COLD and often very choppy, that the bike and run courses will be really hot (90+) and that the altitude will knock me flat.

Sounds like fun, doesn't it?

I'm looking forward to it. I have a feeling the way the weather has been this year that the water will be cold but that's what wetsuits are for. As for the temps well, we'll see. I know it can get hot but at the race I did last year I think it was 95* or so. I learned a lot last year, drink lots of water (I didn't), fuel before you need it (I didn't).

Last year's Pacific Crest Olympic was my first ever triathlon.  It was well organized and a really fun event.  The water was really cold (they said 66 degrees, but I think it was colder than that).  I didn't notice any chopiness in the water. The bike course is point to point, so there is a little logistics to worry about in terms of getting to the lake the morning of... but there are quite a few options for that.

Enjoy central Oregon, it is beautiful!

I am wondering how hilly is the bike course? My bike currently has a 12-23 rear cassette on it and I am struggling to find time to be able to go and buy a new cassette and get it on before the race. Would I be very sorry trying to race the course with this? Thanks for any pointers.

It doesn't sound all that hilly.  One real climb  - 400ft elevation gain over .75 miles doesn't sound bad at all.  The rest is supposedly rolling hills.

The HIM course is another story - but I think the OLY course isn't too bad.

I did the OLY last year and it wasn't too bad.  I have no idea what cassette I'm running, but its most likely just a standard 9 gear range.  I have three rings up front and I didn't use the granny gear at all last year.  There is one main climb of significance about a 1/3 into the ride, but its nothing to bad.  The overall ride is a net decrease in elevation with the last 2/3 of the ride being at a slight downhill.  As I said up-thread, this was my first triathlon last year and I didn't struggle with the bike course at all.  Enjoy the beautiful scenery!
