Just found out that I am being reassigned to Minot, ND from Wichita Falls, TX... So much for running and riding outside in the winter... Any tips other than buy a trainer and treadmill?

buy:

- Jackets

- Running/biking tights

- Ninja Mask

- heavy Duty winter gloves

That is what I wear during the winter, and I was able to bike/run without to much problems!

That sucks.  I'd say train for a marathon in the early season.  I did most of my marathon training MO during the winter (it's no ND) but I became a cold-weather running convert after moving to Texas because I HATE the cold.  I'm not sure about the bike...

Double...Luckily, my mom lives on a boat in the Bahamas and is willing to pay for my kids' tickets instead of coming to ND for the winter...

That sucks.  Snow sucks.  Winter sucks.  I suppose I'm not making you feel better, am I?  Get some spinervals dvd's as well.  It's nice to have a focus on the trainer.

I'll also add under armour, yak trax, and some duct tape to keep the wind/snow out of your running shoes.  Gah, thank god for spring right now, I'm having flashbacks ... of last month.  Tongue out

I've always heard that Minot has some really nice indoor training facilities. Which months will you be PCSing there? Hopefully you won't be getting there in the dead of winter.

I don't live on a boat...but I do live down here where the weather is awesome!  Maybe just a little too hot to train most hours of the summer days though!

I am really surprised that this attitude is out there. I guess it does suck for you. I love running in the winter, in the snow, in the wind. Trails are less crowded.

As a person who's idea of snow is a dusting of about 1/4" and that only happens once a year ...  I'd say suck also and start looking for a new job.. lol.  I don't "do cold" and my Mrs is worse about it than I am.  Give me my 100 degree 100% humidity August days, I guess it's what I'm used to

Here's a tip:

HTFU.

Actually I assume youre going from Sheppard to Minot, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. If I'm not mistaken, Minot has an old hangar for a workout facility similar to that at Offutt in Omaha, and that sucker is huge. Granted it may get boring but you'll be able to get plenty of long runs in indoors.

I too love running outisde in the winter. Less crowded and, frankly, I feel like a bada** ...

funny...  i already though about snow shoes and told my wife that i WILL be buying a sals mukluk... the snow deosn't bother me, being from colorado... it's the COLD... -30*F is not my idea of perfect otudoor weather... unless i am in an ice shanty fishing with some beer!

I will be moving right before the winter, September and yes, I  am moving from Sheppard to Minot AFB.  I just REALLY enjoy the outdoors.  I have heard that they have the BEST gym in the USAF.  there is an indoor track and swimming pool.  Unfortunately, (yes i know it's taboo here)  there is NOT a crossfit affiliate either.  I guess I will be building my home gym with a trainer being one of my first purchases.  I HATE the dreadmill and probably won't be buying one of those.

I have lived in the northern tier prior to this KI Sawyer AFB in the U.P. and FE Warren AFB in Cheyenne, Wy.  I have avoided Minot for 20 years and I guess it caught up with me.  The wife and I were milling over retirement, but I am not done yet and have some loose ends to tie up.  After this, we will be retiring somewhere HOT, like Tucson or San Diego.  No more COLD!

Dude! I have friends from there!

One of them always wears this hat that says "Minot, ND: -41*F keeps out the rif raf"

Good luck! Get the trainer, and get nice, toasty winter running gear.

I have lived and trained in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada for a couple of winters.  We're talking Subarctic here.  I love running outside in the winter, and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are beauty cardio workouts that build core strength as well.  Is it fun all the time?  No.  But with a slight adjustment to your expectations, you can have a pretty awesome year-round active life.

Now is a great time to pick up lots of winter gear on clearance.  And I'm one of those that feels like a bad*ss when running in the winter.  You get these looks from drivers like you're crazy but the endorphins are so good!

I like running in the winter, most of the time.  If I were moving to a place with wide open wind possibility (which is the case for either Dakota, from what I can tell) I'd probably get a trainer for my bike for the real training.  But I am fully in support of a winter bike - it's all about the layers.  Hopefully you can find some routes with wind coverage!  Have fun with it.

I'm pretty sure I will eventually get used to it... I'm just dreading moving from HOT weather (it was 103* the other day) to COLD( -30*F on an average winter day)...
